Morpheus and hackers, please help me!

Here's my situation. Whenever I turn on morpheus I look at my ZoneAlarm monitor and see that data starts suddenly to go somewhere from my computer. The field that says BYTES SENT is going up up up, but I am not downloading anything and noone is uploading anything. Then zone alarm gives me like 7 blocked access attempts in 1 minute! I am very very scared that someone is trying to access my computer. Please help me!

Morpheus contains SPYWARE!
Get rid of Morpheus and download WinMX

That answered your question. Spyware reports back things about you to a third party. Nuke it right away, go with WinMX. Scan your system with Ad-Aware, and it may not hurt to download The Cleaner to do a trojan scan. I assume you also have an up to date virus scanner, if not you're asking for big trouble with file sharing.

You realize programs like Morpheous and Kazaa are "sharing" programs right? That means other users can upload anything in your shared folder, unless you turn this option off. What you see happening to your computer is exactly what you're doing on someone else's when you download a song or other file. If you use these programs heavily, get ready to re-format on a regular basis.

Why would you need to re-format on a regular basis?

Cool

Because Ryan, when you share your files, they are going to get corrupted and eventually a format and reload is the only way to get thing working properly again.

Hi Calmius

I guess I should have elaborated a bit on my answer.
As Hal said, this is the answer to your problem.
Because Morpheus contains SPYWARE, everytime you start up Morpheus it sends information about you and your system back to some remote location. This is the activity that you are witnessing as soon as you start up the program.
Get rid of Morpheus and install WinMX and your problem will cease.
As Hal said, after you get rid of Morpheus, run Ad-Aware full scan and get rid of all SPYWARE entries.

Ad-Aware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com

WinMX: http://www.winmx.com

reformat??

I've been using some flavor of fasttrack; kazaa, morpheus (till recent) or now grokster for well over a year .....never had any problems (except slow downloads perhaps), gotta use common sense , scan what you're not sure of ,etc....but , statements like it's spyware get rid of it, it'll screw up your machine , and now ......gonna have to do a periodic reformat .......have just not been my experience......if you're not sharing but haven't got rid of ad-ware .......that's where you're activity comes from ......haven't tried the new morpheus ( gnutella based)... but always get rid of ad-ware on fasttrack versions....you can do it yourself or DL one of the lite clients......and obviously if you're downloading a file called......HOT,ILLEGAL; YOU WON'T BELIEVE YOUR EYES and its an executable of 47 kb .........I'd say ..scan that puppy b4 opening.....LOL

I'm jumping on the WinMX bandwagon too.

You might also want to try these:

Blubster
Only mp3s though. Small user base but you can usually get good results.

Kazaa Lite (without spyware)
If you still want to use the FastTrack network (Morpheus, Kazaa, Grokster, Imesh)

sometimes the alerts are from other users sending you pings because when people search for files, the software will ping your computer to tell them how fast of a transfer to expect.

With all do respect. I see no tecnical reason , why your shared files should get corrupted. Personaly, I have not had any experience that would make me come to such a conclusion and I have been sharing 10G+ for years.

I hope some one is able to show me a tecnical reason why this should be so.

It's not the file sharing itself that corrupts - it's all the danged viruses and trojans and spyware that you get that do.

Also, your PC is used to do other's searching and ping requests are constantly sent. This is why with these programs you NEVER get your optimal download speed (whatever you get with other programs) as your bandwidth is already being hogged

I must say that although there is some truth to what you are saying. I have to say that I find that you are blowing it out of proportion. If you act sensibly nothing of the sort will ever happen to you.

jack: If you read the posts in these forums that I read every day, you would see my point. Too many people do not KNOW how to "act sensibly" as you put it.

Most likely what websites you visit and probably what programs you use.
