fqpissed 56k modem problem, or what?

Hey everyone,
OK, on one of my PC's I dial up and it connects to msn, but then says it cannot sign me in and whenever I open a browser it says page cannot be found etc..

I know it is not MSN, b/c I dial to the same MSN server from my laptop and it works fine. Should I buy a new modem, will that solve my problem? I don't want to waste money if it doesn't help, so please give me suggestions. Thank you.
Oh yeah, the PC is running Win98

Lincoln,

I would call MSN and ask them to go through all the connection settings and modem settings... There is where the problem is bound to be...

Peace.

Have you ever connected with that PC? If not I agree that you just don't have the correct settings!

Used to do tech support.

If you can't actually browse anything, we used to recommend removing TCP/IP, rebooting and re-installing it. If that doesn't work, do the same with your modem drivers.

Similarly with DUN. Remove, reboot and re-install.

Sometimes just creating a new dialer in DUN would solve the problem of bad username/password in authentication!

It's less drastic than buying a new modem.

I had the same problem with a new modem and msn account, the customer was able to dial up and connect to thr service provider, but could not open explore to the home page, said server could not be found, well the customer was expermenting around one night, not knowing what he was doing, and rud disk clean in the w98 system tools and for some dtrange reason it fixed the problem, what ever it was, been working great ever sence.
it was not a moden issue.

If the modem was the problem, of course it would fix the problem. It's much easier and cheaper to try the other ideas above. I don't know if MSN has the same setup as AOL or I would have responded sooner. Make note of the # you dial, then remove the DUN from My Computer. Then start, run, type inetwiz and go from there - it will setup a new DUN for your ISP. There are few things to check in your properties for ISP under the DUN connectoid. Check these first and if ok, do the above and recheck; the settings are defaulted wrong. Rt click the correct ISP icon in DUN, click properties then Server types tab. ONLY "enable software compression" and TCP/IP should be checked. OK. Select the TCP/IP settings box and ensure "use default gateway..." is checked.

MSN kinda uses the DUN - what you need to do is uninstall MSN using add/remove programs - and then install a fresh copy with the MSN cd. You can't use inetwiz to set up MSN to the best of my knowledge.

OK, Sarge I tried what you told me to do, and it didn't work still.

GLC I want to do what you told me to do, but I don't have the MSN disk. Is there anyway I can save the MSN thing on a floppy on my other computer, before I delete it off the one I'm having trouble with and reinstall it? Which file do i save?

You are going to have to call MSN and ask them to send you a new CD. You can certainly download it, but it's WAY too big to fit on a floppy.

I would call them anyway and give them a shot at checking your settings, etc. I don't have MSN and am not knowledgeable about their proprietary software, I stick to ISP's that use standard DUN connections.

You know - I would bet that you can find a MSN cd at most computer-related stores, they should be almost as easy to find as AOL cd's - and probably sitting right next to them on the counter.

Hey guys, I don't think it's MSN, because I tryed dialing up to NetZero and it would connect, but could not "sign-IN" .

Is it a modem problem you think? Should i buy a new modem?

If you are connecting it's not the modem, your MSN settings are fouled some where. Call MSN and have them go through the settings with you.

This simple not being able to "sign-in" problem is really making me frustrated. About 3 days now.

OK, so if it's connected just not signing in, I guess we determined it's not the modem's fault?

Anyone know MSN helpline number? I'm just not eager to call because last time about half a year ago, I had to talk to a guy that hardly spoke english and spoke too fast...

What d*mn setting do I have to change...Someone out there has to know????? I'm pretty desperate, so if you give me a solution that works, i'll send you $5 cash just email me your address, if your solution fixes this problem, ill be so happy. Thanks for your time.

If you dont want to call MSN, go to the store and find a MSN cd and reinstall it. It should take care of any wrong settings for you.

Have you tried removeing and re-installing TCP/IP and DUN?

Try it, won't take too long. Definitely not a modem hardware problem.

It sounds to me like there is no data transferring which would be a DUN or TCP/IP fault.

ok, I think I made a slight progress. Now, I am consistently connecting to MSN, just whenever I open a browser, it gives me that page "The page cannot be found" - Is there a way to fix that?

Are you running a firewall? At any rate, take your time and carefully walk through this:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q241344

"NOTE : When you attempt to view web pages in Internet Explorer after you install MSN (Microsoft Network) 5.1, you may have similar symptoms.

This behavior may occur because Internet Explorer is configured to use a proxy server to search when none is specified.

To resolve this issue, configure Internet Explorer to automatically detect settings. "

***The above, in quotation marks, may be all you need.

If you have Win98, the MSN software is most likely on the Win98 CDRPM.
