What exactly is the Opera browser? Although I use IE mostly, Im starting to lean twards Netscape. Why should anyone give Opera a try?

Why should you give it a try? Because it isn't IE or Netscape; isn't that reason enough?
It's just another browser, but without the security issues of IE and without the compatibility issues some people have with Netscape. I've tried it and it works fine. |

What I meant to ask is, is there any features that Opera can boast that would make me want to try it? An article I read recently stated that 10 million users now surf the web with opera. How come There is so little being said about it? Ive heard that pages load faster using Opera, any truth to this?

I know GLC uses it exclusively, so he'll probably chime in here soon... I've used it, and like it plenty, but recently I've switched to Mozilla, and think I'm going to stick with it. The 2 best parts of Mozilla IMHO are the integrated pop-up killer, and the tabbed browsing. It doesn't hurt to try them out, I like to have a bunch on my system to play with.

The #1 reason anyone should use Opera or Mozilla is because they are by far a lot more secure than IE. I use both, but prefer Opera over Mozilla because it seems to be the faster of the two.

I just downloaded Mozilla and at first glance it appears very similar to earlier versions of Netscape. For a full version of Opera, the official site wants $39. Do you know of a freeware site for Opera?

Opera loads pages pretty fast compared to IE. I don't use it becasue the bannerless version isn't free. If it were, I might give it another go.

You can use it for free. You pay to remove the banners, last I checked. |

The banner frankly doesn't bother me any more. I first tried Opera to have an alternative to IE and Netscape - the last version of IE that I cared for was 3.0 and Netscape 4.7 is an old bloated dog - and Netscape 6.0 was a disaster. I was not terribly impressed with Opera 5.x but 6.x is a MAJOR improvement and is now my browser of choice. I was a solid Netscape fan since 1.2 for Win 3.1 but today their product stinks as bad as IE 4+.

I have tested all three; IE, Mozilla, & Opera. Opera is by far my favorite and I bought the bannerfree version. I figure I might as well support a good product. The only complaint I have with Opera is that is doesn't always render javascript enabled webpages correctly. I think they wrote their own proprietary code for javascript. The main things I like about Opera is that it's very customizable and seems faster than IE or Mozilla.
edit: One good example of improper rendering is my own website: www.guideshop.com |

i have both IE6 and opera but use opera almost all the time,it's more friendly to use and seems a little faster altho this is not really a factor for me. my only complant is i can't get it to remember passwords, maybe someone can tell me how or maybe this is one of the security measures it has? i use the free version and like glc i don't even notice the banners.

Make sure that File > Preferences > Privacy > "Use cookies to trace password protected pages" is unchecked
If that option is checked opera will more than likely delete cookies from secure sites. edit: You might also try adding the domain to the accepted filter list. Last edited by ryanatalie; 06-09-2002 at 09:48 AM. |

Go to: File > Preferences > Privacy > Edit Server Filters...
Then Select "Accept from Domain" and add the domain. For instance: if I wanted to accept cookies from the Hotmail domain I would Add: .hotmail.com Hope that makes sense |

I like Opera, and use it in both Windows and Linux. I really like the ability to re-size a page on the fly with their adjustment feature. It uses real Sun Java, and I can put up with the minor display problems. The built in download mgr is a real plus for me. I really enjoy being able to download an entire browser without having to use an 'active setup' type arrangement.

I love opera, its so much more easier to navigate then ie, i think the best thing would be the mouse gestures, for examlpe
r-click + left = go back in history r-click + right fo forward in history r-click + up then down - auto reload page r-click + down then up - duplicate window r-click + right, left, right - auto close window There are simply loads, a simple click and a movement will do something, i love it - and this way i use cache so much more than i did with ie, As probably mentioned, with opera you wont have to have x amount of windows opened in your taskbar, for example; where as with opera you can use tabbing; Its amazing, im so glad i stopped using ie, (well i stopped using ie in an attempt to go anti-microsoft but the attempt failed as im still using there o.s currently) :-) Hope you give it a try, and as said, the banner is nothing, you dont notice it James |
