CRASH why can't i ping?

hi folks,
i am on a lan and i can see other machines on the network, including the proxy server and i can browse. when i try to do a ping, however,
for example:
C:\> ping www.yahoo.com
i get this message:
"Ping request could not find host www.yahoo.com. Please check the name and try again."

the ip address is specified
the subnet mask is specified
the gateway is specified

what causes this?

Try pinging 66.218.71.87, if that works I would guess that it's a DNS issue, maybe the way the proxy server is configured.

pic,

It sounds like the proxy server is blocking ICMP if you can browse the internet. Is this a corporate network? Is there an administrator?

pic,

If I understand what you initially said, you ARE able to browse the internet, is that correct? You are unable to ping. Is there a specific reason you need to ping? Check with the proxy administrator to confirm that ICMP traffic is blocked and why. If there is a specific need to ping, you might be able to get them to allow it.

I asked because that sounds like the most likely scenario and rather than have you (and me) spin our wheels trying to sort it out, go to the horse's mouth.
