Question e-mail

What are the advantages and/or disadvantages of using an e-mail program like Pegasus or Eudora Vs. using a freebie like hotmail or yahoo?

i believe pagasus and eudora are e-mail programs, but with hotmail and yahoo, you actually have email services complete with address and everything.

Hi Charles,

Well, all of those are not email programs. There is a difference between POP email and web email.

Pegasus, Eudora, and Outlook Express are used to check POP email. This is where you connect to a mail server from your ISP and download the messages to your computer. You can only read your email with an email client that is configured with the POP server and your login/pass. The advantage is that you can download your email and then disconnect from the net, you don't have to be connected to read it since it has been downloaded to your system.

Hotmail and Yahoo mail are web mail services. Instead of using POP servers, the email is located on their web servers, and the advantage is that you can check it from any computer with a browser and an internet connection. Instead of running the email client, you just login to their web site.

Hope that helps.

Question

I get it. So, what can you do with Pegasus and Eudora that you can't do with Hotmail and Yahoo?

I havn't used Hotmail or Yahoo mail too much, but my guess is that Pegasus or Eudora would have more advanced options such as filtering, and message rules where you can seperate your mail into folders. Also, you can switch between messages quicker with an email program than you can with webmail.

Hotmail can be used like a POP account with Outlook Express(best of both worlds). Been doing it for quite a while. Hotmail has just about the same filtering and message rules.
Pegasus and Eudora are both great programs.
I also have a POP softhome account and have used OE, Pegasus and Eudora with it. But I really like Foxmail .
I just like the interface better. A lot of choices. Try them all out.
