Rains started and my phone line just started to get noisy. Calling the phone company to fix it has proven a pain in the arse (they hardly come to fix it). And the problem was that my Internet connection was dropping constantly. Man, sometimes I couldn't stay connected for a minute.
I had an old 3COM internal modem that I never used because it came with no drivers (it was an OEM one). I never found drivers for it and all the drivers files that 3COM sent me never worked. So, in a paroxism of desperation I did a search for old drivers in the USR web site. The modem has a lot of numbers printed on it. It turned out to be a USR 2974. I downloaded that set of drivers and lo and behold... it worked! Oh My, What a difference!! The phone line is still noisy but the connection hasn't dropped a single time! I know I will never put a Conexant modem on my machine. Now the only thing I'd like to know is if this is a Winmodem or a true hardware modem. Does anyone know that?

I'm pretty sure it's a hardware modem.

USR modems do better at maintaining a connection on sorry lines. Proven long ago in the labs, I've proven it myself just as you did. You should get your lines fixed anyway. Don't mention anything about modem connections but insist on a noise & transmission test from your dmarc with a copy of results. Telcos are required to meet certain standards in that area. The test results should point them in the right direction to fix.

I think it's a winmodem too, isn't it a conexant modem? So it's a winmodem.

I have found that when I am forced to use the existing Conexant modem that adding one of these strings under modem, advanced settings, extra settings, gives a more stable connection however it is slower.

The Conexant is a winmodem for sure, but is the USR a winmodem as well?
