Faulty and slow internet - on cable
I am running through a D-Link NIC, then into a 4 port Linksys router which is set to run as a gateway, does that matter? Then I run into my Toshiba cable modem using RoadRunner.
Now, about 1/2 of the time when I open IE I cannot open about 90% of pages, I get either a file not found error or an unable to access at this time error. That, or IE will simply hang there, with the windows logo waving in the upper right and it will not open, ever. Sometimes it is fine if I reopen IE, but most of the time I have to restart my PC. It does not always happen right at the beginning, but it sometimes happens while im in the middle of browsing (praying it will let me submit my thread). Also, recently I have been getting messages that there are errors and such and such a line and do I want to debug, I always hit no, but what is that? Help please? Thanks PS: My pings in CS servers and such are still good, bandwith is not the problem.

Bypass the router by plugging directly into the NIC from the Cable Modem. If the problems go away, do a reset on the router.

Since your pings are still good, then maybe it's a problem with the DNS servers.

If I were to change the router to run as a router rather than a gateway, what, if anything, would I have to change? Would this give me increased reliability?

Check your manual. On mine from the control panel I had to set the PC's to obtain IP address automatically, remove any Gateways, disable DNS and do a set up for the router.

Furius92,
No, do not change to "router". That is the setting you would use if there were other routers in your network. It enables the transmission of RIP and RIP2 messages to announce your routers information. Leave it as "gateway". To fix the scripting error messages, open Tool > Internet Options > Advanced and turn on the option to "Enable script debugging" and turn off "Display a notification about every script error". What you are describing sounds like name resolution (DNS). Check your cable operators support web pages to see if they identify the DNS server addresses to be used. Is your cable connection DHCP? If so, is your router set to obtain IP automatically? Your computers must also be set to obtain IP automatically. The DNS addresses shopuld be obtained during the process of getting the IP address. If the DNS provided by the cable operator changes and your router does not pick up on it or the computers do not pick up on it, you will get this situation. Hope that helps. The Old Man |

Whoa, I just entered a thread from PCMech and it linked me to a fricken porn site! You'll have to trust me when I say I haven't visited anything such as that, AND I just cleared out my history and temporary internet files like 30 minutes ago anyways. What's up? What would cause THAT!?

I am now directly connected to my cable modem VIA Cat5. I am having the same problems I was before. Those include:
1. Automatic redirecting to random pages, but the address line stays the same 2. Random pictures and graphics not being displayed, but a little box with a red X in its place (like I'll see one or two of the little tabs at the top of the page, but the rest will be red Xs) 3. Getting 404 not found errors, but restarting IE or my PC and the same site works That's most of them. Time to call RoadRunner? Oh, it just did it again, I had to copy and paste this message cause I had to restart IE to post it... |

1. Download and run AdAware from LavaSoft. You can get it from www.download.com. Let it search out and remove anything it finds. You can let it back them up, if it makes you feel comfortable. 2. Make sure your virus defs are up to date and do a full scan. 3. Use the following link to check for specific behavior and removal instructions. http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/Darnit.htm#tshoot BTW, did you disable the script debugging? |

I had scanned with Ad-Aware a week or so ago, so it found nothing "suspicious" this time. I updated PC-Cillin and it found two cases of PE_NIMDA.A-O and one of IRC_FLOOD.W. The IRC thing I don't think is a virus, but anyways, it wasn't able to clean anything. None of these files seem to be important, one is in the font folder, another in a, well, it says I:\RECYCLER for the folder. The last one is sbaudiosetupus.eml. If I remember correctly, Nimda affects web activity, right?
Now, it wasn't able to clean any of them, but in the scanning window, after it is finished, all three files are listed. I can highlight them, but I am unable to delete them from there. I am also unable to find them in the specefied folders. I have the second option, if it can't clean the files, set to quarantine. Where can I find these files so I can delet them? I deleted the files in the QUARANTINE folder inside of the PC-Cillin directory, but they weren't the files listed after the scan. Thanks for the help PS: The IRC_FLOOD.W is in the C:\WINDOWS\Font\Gates.txt file. The other two files have Nimda. |
