One site at a Time
When I try to view two or more websites by alternating between them, the browser closes the first site in order to open the second. It's almost like there is only "room" for one site at a time. I can't tell if it is an Ie-6 thing, or my computer. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Modem?
Help...

Try this go to modem settings in control panel then click properties then click the connection tab then click port settings and then you see recieve buffer and transmit buffer, try lowering them down to 0 or click default. Just a though!

Thanks for the tip. I set them low (one click above zero) and I can keep open 2 sites on Ie6 and 3 on Mozilla. Does that mean I'm dealing with a modem settings issue? Can someone explain what dictates how many sites can be held open at once?
It's an AMD k6-2 333, v92 modem, 128ram , dial up phone line connection. Thanks again for the answer. Last edited by Needtoknow; 07-12-2002 at 10:23 PM. |

Have you updated your driver and everything? What kind of modem is it?

Hi Nictrix,
Updated modem drivers, yes. Its a new Broadxent Creative v.92, loaded from the disc, haven't downloaded from the web site or anything. Is this a part of modem function or is it not using the Ram effeciently? maybe. It's an old board that probably used p66, i have 256 of pc133 in it and I am not sure how well it is being utilized. Buffers seem to be a part of it but may be my imagination. Using Mozilla it will keep 3 sites open. I 'm not sure that maybe I'm just being too demanding on this elderly creature. I'll ck the website for an updated driver , eh? thanks |

Go to internet tools then the advanced tab and click on restore defaults that should be good. Go here for my other tip:
http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=38222 Also try this with the modem properties again, go to the same place I told you before, but stay in the first tab and go down to max speed and click on the highest possible. |

Also go to the connection tab in modem properties and go to data bits click 8, then go down and click parity to say none, then last click on stop bits and put 1 in there

Ok Nictrix, Most of those things I had done, I had even seen your thread
I thought the prob had ceased cause I've been using Mozilla and not thinking about it. But I am using Ie-6 and it is closing the window I'm in to open the one I click to. It will hold 3 open in Mozilla but just 1 at a time in Ie-6... Sound like maybe reload or uninstall and reinstall? A little help here please Thanks |

Hi Needtoknow, when you say this elderly thing, how old is it? Can you give us the system specs, this helps us troubleshoot. Thanks.

I'm gonna have to just fish around here cuz I'm not that good tech-wise.
Which OS? Did this just start happening or has it been a long time? If it just started what did you do just before then? Did it work okay before you upgraded to IE 6.0? Quote:

Hi,
os is win 98-se, I meant reinstall Ie-6, I can't remember if it was happening before, but I went to pcpitstop.com and the tests suggested lowering the size of cache in internet settings and that actually seems to have mostly solved the problem. Per that site, anything over 80mb for temp internet files can be a problem...interesting. I can keep two open now on ie-6 with it set at 75. I am going to experiment with lower etc and see. Anyone have any input on this? Clean install of os, by the way. Update: just tried it again and its dropping one screen in order to open the other one. This is really annoying! Yeah NTK, a lot of foks here like Opera. Did it cost you?
You know, I recently set my max for temp internet files to 7 MB. Why should I put up with more? Am wondering, it just sounds like it is some basic ez fix.... Hey, do you mind posting your PCPitstop results so I could take a look at them? I wanna look at the memory and stuff. If you want I can post the ones I did today, finally got defrag to 0%. We can talk about our old systems.

Hi Tim,
The Opera with ads is free. I figured out how to make it run fullscreen and I don't have to look at the ads so I can handle that. I put in a new mobo that was more capable than my old one so the weird memory usage probs went away. I did a full thorough scandisk then defragged to fix my disk probs, its good now. One funny though, the pcpitstop site doesn't recognize Opera so if I go there on Opera it just doesn't "see" me. I have to go back and switch to Ie-6. I went after replacing mobo and got checkered for all, then went back and it told me Ie-6 bad, video card misused. I will post to show you as soon as I figure out how. I think you are right, something simple on Ie-6 but I am tempted to uninstall and redownload, I am getting fed up a touch... Microsoft runs the world (or thinks they do?) Now it's back to letting me open one site at a time again.... Last edited by Needtoknow; 07-21-2002 at 10:45 AM. |

Well I went back to pcpitstop I see it does use Opera if one pays attention
I made some adjustments last night, guess they worked. Now it is telling me everything is good. Go figure. Still trying to get the link part figured out. Last edited by Needtoknow; 07-21-2002 at 10:49 AM. |

You replaced your motherboard? Which one did you use?
At PCPitstop click on TechExpress (on left side) and email your results to me. timpoet@hotmail.com Or if you don't mind others seeing them you go to the page that has your results, copy the URL and paste it here in the post box. I'll do this right now for mine. http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/S...?conid=4508498 |
