I have web space available thru an emergency dial up account, but the URL is in the http://www.myisp.com/~mywholename/index.html format. For simplicity, I want to register a simple domain name (so I'm trying to figure out the best/cheapest way to do that) as well as having that domain forwarded to my actual web space at http://www.myisp.com (so I'm looking for resources for that service as well).

Thanks for any help.

Send a message via ICQ to cobra Send a message via AIM to cobra
When you get your domain registered, contact a hosting service and they can set that up for you, easy. Done every day........

Thanks Cobra. I guess I should have been more specific. I'm looking for specific recommendations for companies to register through and for companies who do web forwarding. Has anyone had either any good experiences or maybe ideas of places to stay away from?

Thanks.

Oh, ok
Well, as far as web hosts go, they are a dime a dozen...
I have used a couple. I currently use hostsave and when I had a problem with frontpage not being able to publish "changed" pages, ONLY entire site, I was PO'D!!!!!!
They do not have a phone number for support on their site, I had to look it up, somewhere in California.... I did not get the support I needed, they emailed me back and said I need to get Front page 2000. That was like almost a year ago. For $5.95/month, not bad, but I will not use them for anything again.Hope I have offered some insight.

Try www.namezero.com, It's free, but you have a banner.

Yeah namezero looks good, but I would pick a domain that you would not feel too bad losing if you were to decide not to use namezero anymore. Check out the Terms of Service agreement. You might have a tough time keeping your domain if you so desired after leaving namezero.

Send a message via ICQ to doltish
http://www.nozonenet.com/ is what I use. Aside from occasional E-mail server problems, they have amazing features and very low prices. It is a small company...the guy who runs it offers free support over ICQ, he'll help you out with just about anything you need...I even ask him HTML questions every now and then.

Domain name, and your own webserver with no banners

To get a good domain and forwarding go to http://www.yournamefree.com you can register one there and manage domain forwarding and also free email forwarding. You can use Apache for free to setup your own web server in your own pc. If you have a static ip address given by your isp; set your forwarding to your ip address such as: http://67.128.1.54 ...if you have a dynamic ip address that always changes then go to http://www.no-ip.com . After you set that up go to your domain administration console and set your forwarding to the sight you set up at no-ip and add the folder your webfiles are kept in. such as http://www.sytes.net/YourWebFolder
Go to C:\program files\apache group\htdocs and create your web folder inside the htdocs folder.
After that, Bing, Bing, Your done! You're you're own web server with no banners. Have fun!
