Question 56k Download speeds...?

Hey was just wondering... Why do I on average get a 2-5 kb transfer rate on most . The school I work at gets around a 12kb average for most downloads. Why do I get such slow tranfer rates? All of these comptuers arent networked or anything just hooked up to the phone line.. 56k connection... but yet I just happen to have the slowest rates? Because I dont think tehy are netowrked up to liek a t1 line or anything? Could someone explain why this is happening ro is it just my luck?

A 56k connection will at most transfer at around 6kb. It's not possible to get those higher speeds on a regular 56k dial-up modem.

56K means 56 kilo bit per second.
8 bit = 1 byte.
If you do some alculations, you'll find that the highest speed for a 56K modem is ~ 7 kilo byte per second.

Me too, The highest speed I have ever seen when using my 56K modem is ~ 5.5KB, a 56K modem can't go higher than 7KB/Sec, it can go lower though.

There is the overhead for flow control and error correction, which is why you never actually see the full speed.
