Connection slowing then disconnecting?.
Im having trouble with my internet connection. When i leave imesh or kazaa downloading i start of with really good speeds but within an hour or so i get next to nothing or disconnected.Ive been in touch with my isp(ntlworld) and they have got it down to a resourses problem.I have Xp and a 1.8 Athalon with 256k of ddr.I ran xp device manager and watched under performances, there is a catagory there that says physical memory and as imesh is downloading it getting less and less.It started out at about 140,000 and i watched it for about 25min and it got to 5000 but then seemed to get some memory from somewhere and go back to about 100,000.I am just wondering if when it gets that low it starts to shut things down which are just running in the background(imesh and kazaa).Im not really sure how this works but would windows xp do this?.Please help i dont seem to be getting anywhere.
Thanks in advance. Ps 512 broadband connection |

Sounds like a memory leak to me. Have you tried closing all programs, including the ones in the system tray, before downloading? I would try that first to narrow down the list of possibilities.

I cant really close anything down.I have norton firewall and antivirus and nothing else running. Is there such a thing as memory leakage?.If i sit on taskmanager the physical memory is droping like a stone. From 140,000 to 5000 in 20 minutes is this normal?.

Yes, there is such a thing as memory leakage, and no, memory dropping like that isn't normal. It sounds like there is more than just Norton utilities running.
Why don't you go to Start...Run and type msconfig. Then post back with the programs that are listed on the Startup tab. |

Cmesys is spyware from Gator, and that may very well be the culprit. Download Ad-Aware 5.83 and run it to remove that garbage. It wouldn't be a bad idea to download The Cleaner from www.moosoft.com as well. It looks for trojans.
In addition, nwiz.exe is a program from nVidia that allows easy access to video preferences and optimizations. However, it is not needed for your graphics card to work, so you may want to uncheck it in the Startup list in msconfig. You may find that Kazaa or Imesh don't work after you have run Ad-Aware and removed the spyware. I would suggest using WinMX for P2P. No spyware. Last edited by doctorgonzo; 07-25-2002 at 02:25 PM. |

Go for it all. There's no such thing as "good" spyware, IMO. Unfortunately, many P2P programs require spyware to run properly. With Ad-Aware, you can always back everything up and restore it if you find that Imesh or KaZaa no longer work. But still, I think WinMX is a better choice than fooling around with spyware.

If that one file is doing all the problem in my start up can i not just diasable it by taking the check out of the box.I know lots of people have bad things to say about kazaa and imesh but im quite used to them now though and would like to keep them if possible.
