AOL version
I know - I hate AOL too. But a customer has an AOL account she shares with a relative and wants to keep it that way. I am building her a new system and I wanted to check to see what version of AOL I should install. I believe from what I've read that AOL ver. 6.0 is it but thought I'd check.
Also, does one need to set up a dial-up adapter just like normal or is this different with AOL? As you can tell I usually stay away from AOL as far as I possibly can. Thanks for the replies.

I think AOHell sets everything up for you. I avoid AOL like the plague.

Version depends on the OS
AOL 7.0 for Win9x/ME AOL 6.0 for Win2K/XP AOL 5.0 for WinNT Yes, it will set up the modem for you but it is not always correct. YOu may need to tweak it. And NO ... I have not used AOHell for many, many years. I have found it workable for my kids and those not as technically competent. Hope that helps. The Old Man |

Thanks to you both for the replies. This will either be a win98 or 2K setup - are there any specific tweaks that you recall?
Yes the Radeon 8500 is great. I upgraded from a Gainward GF2 Ti500 and one game I like to play called DX-Ball (I'm a simple gamer ) now just flies. I did not expect to see that much difference on a simple game but I reached scores of 100,000+ with the GF2 now I'm lucky to get past 50,000 because the ball moves so much faster. The AIW is very cool and I like that I can use the blended window feature and have the tv playing faded or transparent like in the background and still have full use of the desktop. I don't use the cool remote much though. Last edited by PardeGT; 07-26-2002 at 09:50 PM. |

I have installed AOL for a number of friends. Everyone I know seems to have it (except me). Not surprisingly, none of my friends are especially computer literate. My experience is stay away from AOL 6.0 at all costs. It's installation has caused problems on a number of systems I've worked on. AOL 7.0 has been relatively easy to install. Have used it on Win98, WinME, Win2K, and WinXP with no problems.
Hope this helps. |

Don't forget [or be advised if you are not aware] that the AOL install changes the version it installs depending on the OS. If you run an install off an AOL 7.0 CD on an NT system, you get AOL v5.0. If you run it on a Win2K system, you get AOL v6.0. And it doesn't tell you this either.

I have 6.0 installed on this 2K box and it didn't do too much damage. It does stick IE 5.5 with AOL branding on and puts aol.com in the Trusted zone whether you like it or not. The only reason I installed it is because I have a $4.95/3hr emergency account and I had to get into billing, which is not available over the Web.
