How do I get on the Internet with no browser??
I just finished installing a PCMCIA NIC in a laptop (p133) that's running WIN95B. It's on our network at home and I was going to get in on the net but someone's deleted Internet Explorer. How do I get on the Net now? I don't have a WIN 95B cd to install an older version of IE. I've got my 98SE cd.
I want to get on the net with ANY version of IE and then upgrade it to 6.0. Suggestions?

What about doing a download of Opera since it's alot smaller, about 11mb, burning it to disc, and then you have a working browser.

Hi Ron,
Can you visit a site by typing the URL in the Windows Explorer bar? If not, do you have another system with a CD burner so you can install a copy of Mozilla? |

DrZ, I've got two systems running 98SE with burners.
I don't remember, does 95 have a windows explorer bar? Perhaps the suggestions about downloading Opera or Mozilla, then burning them is the way to go. Also, will IE 6.0 run on WIN95B??? |

I havn't used Win95 in a while, so I'm not sure if it has the built-in explorer feature. As far as I know, IE6 will work with any version of Windows.
Hmm, just checked the IE site and they list this. Quote:

OK, thanks Z, I'm downloading Opera right now. I'll transfer it over the network to the laptop and that should be a start.
Thanks! |

UPDATE:
I downloaded opera and I'm on the internet now. I might just keep Opera on there as the drive is a 1.2gb and only has about 400mb free. Thanks all. |

IE 6.0 will not run on Windows 95 at all.

Streams,
That's what I thought by the info on Intel's site. What's the alternative if you want IE? Download 5.0? |

Hi Ron,
Think you need to go back to IE 4.0 for Win95. I don't think IE 5.0 will work. If M$'s site doesn't have it, I think cNet does. |

OK, thanks guys, I might just keep Opera on this machine since I'm sure it's a much smaller proggy than IE and this machine only has about 400mb free. It will only need to access the web occasionally.

I think there is also a Dos browser called Arachne. It's only about 5 megs and wouldn't take long to download.

Lol, I just had to laugh at 1.2 gigs. Heh. I have a 95b computer that has 800 mb, so I shouldn't be talking, though no one uses it.
Heh, just get netscape?

Ron: Yes, you can run IE up through 5.5 on 95b, but I strongly recommend that you do not install IE4+ on it. The desktop and OS integration baggage will slow that old beast way down and also destabilize 95. Stick with Opera or put Mozilla on it.
There is a reason that Win95C is regarded as the worst version of Win9x made - it came with IE4. 95B is still nice and lean with IE3 or an alternative browser. |

It depends on the version of windows 95. Windows 95 B and up had a very ugly looking IE. When you first install windows you would have and icon on the desktop labeled "The Internet" which was the old IE. I think i you go to add remove programs ==> windows components there should be a browser buried there either labeled internet explorer or The internet.

95B had IE3. 95C had IE4 with the desktop integration, very unstable. If you want to run IE4+, upgrade to win98, it's a lot more stable than upgrading IE on 95.

Also, a bit late i guess but...
>ftp ftp.netscape.com >anonymous >anonymous >binary Then move to the pub directory and find the exe. You can ftp in dos to netscape's ftp site and grab a browser that way .

Thanks for the info folks, Opera's working very nicely on this little machine so I think my daughter will just stay with that. She uses it mostly for a grading program in her 4th grade class, though she might have to occasionally d/l a file. The main issue was network access via a pcmcia card. I installed the Linksys model glc recommended and it was on our network in no time. I downloaded Opera to my machine, transferred it to hers over the nework, launched Opera and I was on the net.
