Internet providers
I am looking for a new provider. Are the less expensive dial up services any good, like Juno for example is only $9.95 per month. Does sevices like Juno use their own browser or can you use IE? Do you have any suggestions for dial up providers?

I have had MSN, AOL, and Earthlink, they all suck!!! But if you perfer any of the three go with MSN. The problem with AOL is every time you try to disconnect they are always updating there software, in other words they are always putting more junk than you need on your harddrive. I mean how much updating does AOL need to do? Plus they always want to sell you something you don't need.
I use a DSL server and is much better, for $30 more a month I would go with a broadband server. I just updated my kids anti virus and fire wall with Norton and it took 2hrs to download and update it. With my DSL on my PC it took under 2 min. Remember no matter who you use your connect time upload and downloads will not change much at all.

I would search your local yellow pages and get a local providor. Before I got cable in my area, I found a small company in my area with $9 access and it was great. (For dial up anyway) I would just call them up and ask what the price is. I found that a lot of the national cheap providors have connectivity problems. They have too many users.

Have been with Internet America (the be a geek company) for 13 years. Happy to say the least, their tech support is so good they even help with computer problems sometimes that have nothing to do with their dial up etc.
Don't know if you can get it in your neck of the woods, but go to www.airmail.net and see. It's 19.95 month and all I can use where I am is dialup because of old phone lines and of course an unwillingness to pay $300 for a backbone to the house and $50 a month to connect to the Net Agree on the local providers thing, small companies local often sell more connections than they can afford phone lines for or something. Everyone I'be known who has taken a cheap local service came back to a national one or went to another type of service if available. Want satellite some day, have DISH for TV and would love their internet service, just don't like the price. Texas2Step |

I am very happy with Earthlink. It's the only large national ISP that I know of that will work with a standard DUN connection and does not *require* that you load their software. They DO send you software and *encourage* that you install it, but it's totally unneccessary.

I agree with glc, have used Earthlink many times for just that reason, they support direct dial up. I dont know what it is about ISP's that will not let you surf this way but I always get the feeling that all my information (name ect... used when joining) is being sold to big companys. Check with smaller ISP's that may be in your area too, just ask them if they support direct dial up.

Check out your local 'Net magazine to find some of the less-known ISPs. Chances are many of them will offer direct dial-up. The service I am using does and is only $8.99 a month, but unfortunately is only located in the Twin Cities area.

I use a local ISP for $9 a month and you just set up the account through DUN. It literally takes like 5 minutes and your up and running. No banner ads and unlimited use, just IE. Check your are for something similar.

edrod13, who is your ISP? I live in CA but didnt know about any ISP with direct dial up support for only $9 a month. Earthlink is $20 a month but they will have specials all the time for signing up and getting free stuff. So far I have got a free digital camera, scanner, printer, and a web cam. They would always send me a new promo CD in the mail after I canceled saying 'we want you back' the latest one I got from them is for a DVD player, you have to pay for shipping and stay with them for 6 months and thats it. Each time they sent the item(s) really fast too. (less then 7 days) I would really like to get DSL but $50 a month right now is a bit much, used up all my money just to get into the place I'm moving into right now.

The site I posted has dial up for $9.95 but you have to pay 12 mos in advance I think. Most of the cheaper services like this make you pay a few months in advance to get the low price. Like I said, my mother in law has this service and it works great. She pays quarterly so I think it's something like $12.95 a month. |

Check for a smaller local guy. I pay 14.95 mo. And I have NEVER experienced a busy signal in...3 years now. Solid connections (50k+) every time. No ads, banners or BS.
An advantage with a smaller company is you usually set it up through DUN and YOU get to choose your browser. |

I have two small, local ISP's that I use, each for $14.95 (I also have AOL which I seldomly use...got it on a free promotion). In nearly 3 years can count on one hand how many busies and drops I've had COMBINED. Definitely go local, if you can.
I think Cricket posted http://www.freedomlist.com/ recently. Another good site is http://www.findanisp.com/ . Hope this helps. |
