Win98 And BroadBand

I've got my slef a nice custom made pc that has an external alctel speed touch USB modem for my freeserve broad band connection and have noticed that the interent seems to stop fro a 'breather' quite often. i up untill recently had win2000 running and never had this sort of problem, i havent changed which usb port it's or anything since i swapped operating systems, so i dont understand why it has started this problem,

basicly i'll click link and i'll end up have to wait a good 30 second before it will even start loading, whether i want to downlaod something or open a web page, on the internet stops not the whole computer and internet explorer is stop operation and i can click on anything i like, but it wont work for about 30 seconds, and it's not always just every 3 mintues or so, and i've try different website, and the problem still happens.

has anyone else got this problem, does anyone know what it might be?

arg!

Off the top of my head, I would think drivers or IRQ sharing.

Check device manager, see what's sharing with the USB ports. Check for new 98 drivers for the modem.

Also with 98 I'd run the speed tweaks that are available at www.speedguide.net , and see if they help.

You can't control IRQ's because you have ACPI running. Win98 does not handle ACPI well at all, I would go back to Win2K or put XP on it. If you want to stick with Win98, disable all the standard USB ports in the BIOS (you have 2 of them active) and run everything off your USB 2.0 card.
