gone from DSL to dialup and having withdrawls!

Ok...we moved. From town with DSL to out in the middle of no where and having to use crappy dialup at 26,6 speed. Is there anything, anyway, or any program that I can get to help increase download speed? Christmas will be here by the time I download one song from the net!

Hi reet,
Why don't you post your O/S and the modem you're using. There are a few people on this forum that will help you get the most out of what you have. There are settings you can make or even a new modem that deals with your situation. Someone here will know.
Hang in there.
Carl

far enough in the boonies that I can't even get cable. Been researching DirecPC and have found nothing but horror stories. We even went to a satellite dealer and they told us flat out it was a waste of money. Bad connections, slower than dialup.

I have U.S. Robotics 56K Voice INT PnP modem and using Windows 98 SE on a Dell PII. Other puter blew up (another story).

Oh yeah, I really like those French Drop Boquets...lillies, roses etc preferably different shades of pinks

Thanks gang....I know that I can always come here for the best support around.

If you are not networking, Starband is a pretty decent satellite system, they don't "FAP" you like DirecPC does. The reason I say this is because Starband is only networkable with THEIR small business service with THEIR custom "Winproxy" software. DirecPC is networkable with M$ ICS. ANY 2 way satellite system is better than dealing with a 26.4 dialup. Your only other non-commercial option (and it will be very reliable if available) is ISDN, but bend over when the bill comes.

I would never recommend ISDN to anyone. It is extremely overpriced for something that isn't much faster than dialup. We had an office once (quite some time ago) who was using and ISDN line where they paid per call. Something happened where the modem was left on all week (office was empty) and it wouldn't stay connected. So basically it was calling, making a connection, then hanging up. To make a long story short, at the end of the month a phone bill for $44,000 came and there was nothing else to do but pay it.

Another option is to look into a Wireless ISP. I have been using wireless for 6 months and love it as it is my only option for broadband at the moment.

We had ISDN at the office a few years ago. It worked really well, not as fast as DSL, but it was rock solid. It was expensive, seems like our bill ran about $300. per month. It cost us about $1500 to get installed, they had to pull a number from about 150 miles away.

I still see the phone company advertising it, so I'm guessing that it may have come down in cost as DSL and Cable are available here now.
