Proxy Server Help ASAP!!!
I'm not sure if this would be the correct topic but here goes: I am at a university and connected to the net through the university's network. I don't know much about networking/lan's/etc. but somehow when we are connected the university can prevent us from using things like Kazaa and ftp. I am not sure how they do it, but whenever connected to the net, I can't get those things to work. The university specifically states that they prefer us not to use services like these because it uses excessive bandwidth. Well I have a few websites and I NEED to be able to ftp to them so I can update them and whatnot otherwise I won't be able to continue my business (and continue attending college). I was thinking that possibly connecting through a proxy would prevent the university from stopping me when connecting on FTP or anything similar. Is this correct???? If so, how do I go about doing it?? I know virtually nothing about that sort of thing so any input would be helpful. I have posted in the past and know you guys are really great at helping those not as advanced as you, so I am thanking you in advance for the info I hope you can provide.

For legal and ethical reasons, all we can do here is suggest you speak with your system admin department and see if you can negotiate a solution. Your other option is get a dialup, cable, or DSL account of your own (and write it off as a business expense). The university owns the bandwidth and has the right to decide how it's used, so we can't really help anyone with bypassing this.
