transferring files via ftp

I am trying to get a project me and my buddies worked on at school. Can we set up ftp if we drop our firewalls. We had been uploading to my buddies server but he's not around. I don't know how he did it. TIA

If all you are trying to do is "get" the project, you don't need to do anything with your firewalls. Just run an FTP client.

If you are trying to upload, you don't have to drop your firewalls. You just need to open up certain ports. Unfortunately, it's just not that simple. To upload to someone, they have to be running an FTP server. You need to be running an FTP Client. The client part is easy.

You can get an FTP server from the MS Windows CD if you've got a server variety. It's generally packaged with IIS. There are also some that can be downloaded from the internet. Just do a Google search for FTP.

Bear in mind that FTP can be risky since it is essentially unsecure. Password, etc are not encoded in the transmission. Also getting it to run behind a router can be tricky unless you want to put the machine in the DMZ.

Sorry if I made it confusing, but TheOldMAn seems to be leaning in the right direction. I just need some files from my old roomates at school. I didn';t have a computer back then and I did all my projects on his. I was an MIS major who took many programming electives. One thing I wanted to do was turn a web project of mine into something a bit more cool and put it up.

For one project I did, it was in ASP, a server side language. To work on it, I transferred files via ftp to his computer, so I could get some error messages. He must have his stuff up like Oldman said as an ftp server I guess. I don't need to upload, but my sender will have to right? Or do i just need to be a server to actually put up the page? Cuz I just want it to work on it, No need to worry about putting it up for a bit. I will check google and see what i can come up with.

Texuspete00,

Now I understand what you are trying to do.

If the project was uploaded to your buddies server, you'll need to get in touch with him 'cause that's where they are as long as he hasn't wiped his system.

Seeing as this was a school project, it may have gotten uploaded to another server somewhere for testing/grading. If so, you may be able to track that down and download from that server.

If you get the project, you can run a web server on your own machine or another local box. You do not need to FTP the files, you can just copy to the web server's root directory.

Good luck in tracking it down.
