hmmm... when i installed kazaa lite, i don't remember downloading any host files.
i would suggest ditching kazaa, and going with a safer program like winmx. kazaa (and kazaa lite) have been known to cause problems.

The file you've mentioned is for getting rid of popups, when using it, you will get empty popups, so if you really want to get rid of them, I recommend using a popup stopping program.

oh yea, messing with host files is not recommended unless you know what you're doing.

Kazaa is a virus (IMHO).
Get WinMX, or any number of other good P2P programs, and live without the ads or spyware. |

I second the 'boot here. I get machine after machine across my bench with complaints of slowdowns and unable to get on the internet. Damn near every time it comes down to Kazza and Kazza lite. I have had one customer back to me 5 times now and all 5 times I've told them not to use Kazza, but everytime it's... well,, my friend said..... and every time I have told them... well.. I have said this.. and I CHARGE for the repair.

If you want to destroy your computer go with KAZAA, I was over at a friends business the other day to setup a router and hook-up a machine I built a couple of weeks ago. The newest machine had KAZAA installed on it already, along with almost all of the spyware you can find. The Norton Anti-Virus had been disabled/damaged to the point that it did not even show in the ADD/Remove Programs, so I suspect a virus/trojan. And when I removed Kazaa it completely wiped the all of the TCP/IP settings. At that point I got extremely upset, did a system restore, and left. I then got the owner in private, told him what I though of file sharing programs, and explained that if I had to clean any of them on his computers the charge would be punitive.
Anyway if the music is so bad that you won't buy it, then you don't need it. |

As a technician, I love programs like Kazaa and Outhouse Express. Between those two, with ads, corrupt files, TCP/IP headaches, and trojans, it pays the bills. All my other tech work is profit.
So keep going with Kazaa for files, and Outhouse for email, and I'll do just fine thanks.

I am currently in the process of trying to re-install the OS on the
my desktop's C: drive. This is the second time I have had Kazza tear up my machine. Had I looked in this forum recently I most likely would not have this issue on my hands. Just for the record here is what it did to my C: drive. Somethng tore up my directory structure and everything looks like it is written in Russian. My machine will not boot up and says that the C: drive is invalid. Now Scandisk is having problems and I think I may have a "jazzed" drive on my hands. I hope not, it is only three weeks old. Just my thoughts. |

Get a copy of Zero Fill and run it from DOS to complete wipe the hard drive. Then you will have to FDISK and Format it again.
Program is available from www.bootdisk.com Just remember when using this program "C" drive is Drive 0 |

With this wipe the whole physical drive or just the C: partition?
Also, do you think there is any hope saving my Outlook .pst file? I need to schedule a regular back-up of that file. Urghhhhh Thanks for the help. |

Can you get the computer to boot -up and get on the Internet? If so go to http://www.trendmicro.com/free_tools/ and do a virus scan. If it comes up with anything then look-up instructions for removing it at www.symantec.com
If there is no virus re-format the C partition and reload it without installing Kazaa. |

I am dead in the water on that machine. I am currently working on my laptop via hub to DSL.
The machine in question is dead in the water. (no boot-up , no nothing) The drive is a western digital and I have a data lifeguard tools disk. However, I am leary about formating it as I would hate to lose what is on the D: drive. I have come to grips with the C: drive being toast. Now I just want to format it and get going again. WITHOUT Kazaa!!! |

Try a standard DOS format - using zero fill from the WD disk will wipe the entire physical drive.

I have no idea what you guys are talking about, I have Kazaa Lite on 4 pc's without a single problem. Not to sure how a p2p program can "tear up" a machine.

I have not used Kazaa Lite only the full blown headache filled program.
All I know is that I won't be using it again. |

I've had both kazaa and kazaa lite on me comp, and havent come across any problems *keeps his fingers crossed*
When i found out about the spyware, i uninstalled kazaa and put in kazaa lite. but even with kazaa i had no probs. theres a lot of talk about virus/trojans etc.. but if ur smart in what you download you shouldnt have any problems. Of course if u seee a file thats called "britney_spears_s*x_video" and its only 50kb, then u should get suspicious, and if u download it u deserve what u get. anyway, that my 2c. |

Not all trojan/virus things are 50k though. Some are masked at the same filesize as the original, and even a good A/V program may not be scanning your Kazaa downloads.
As anyone with a good router can tell you, you can't even get most P2P programs to work through a router, they're so full of security holes. If Kazaa hasn't crashed your computer yet, it's only a matter of time, even if you're seriously careful. I would do a very cautious uninstall, and registry clean, check TCP/IP settings, and then install WinMX. |

Question to all the people using Peer-to-Peer file sharing programs>
Supose that I called you up on the phone and told you that I would like to come over to your house, set down at your computer, and see if there is any music on it that I would like to copy. And in return I would allow you to come over to my house and do the same. And this would be anytime that you wanted, because we would both agree to keep the backdoor and a couple of windows open so that I could get into your house. Also I have a few thousand friends that would like to do this with you also. So you agree, and pretty soon you have all sorts of people, that you never met before, sitting in front of your computer going through it. How long do you think it would be before one of these people accidently or deliberatly screws up your computer or starts looking around your house for stuff to steal. Now doesn't this sound like a great deal? |
