Question on JPG's

Does a JPG set at "progressive download" actually download faster?

From my understanding, No. It just appears to be loading faster because you can see the low res pop up quicker while the hi res is still D/Ling. A 100K download is just that, a 100K download.

If you want jpegs that download faster - you have 2 choices - resize them to make them smaller or compress them more.

Some modern graphics editing programs do what glc suggest thru the use of jpeg Optimizer Wizzards. For example, Paint Shop Pro 7 has a Wizzard to help control the above and even gives an estimated download time.

I've already fooled with JPG compression, and compressed teh images as far as I could without looking bad. I was just seeing if there were any other options in addition to that.
