PPoe and no surfing
Sorry, that should be PPPoE in the title.
I am trying to help a neighbor out here who is trying to get her knew DSL connection working. The Tech support is stumped at this time and the hold time for Tier2 is just too long, so I thought I would try here. When you click on the icon that is supposed to connect you it goes through all the motions and connects just fine. I can look at the details of the connection and see that there is an IP address, and that it is using the DNS servers. Also noticed that the gateway is the same as her IP address and I am not sure if that is normal or not. Tier1 tech support says that it is. The problem is that it will not surf the net (page cannot be displayed) nor can I ping anything except the local adapter. I also noticed that the software SBC had us install set it up to use an automatic configuration script under the connection tab under internet options. I tried it without this and still had the same results. I am not familiar with PPPoE at all so really do not know what it could be. Anyone have any ideas? Windows 98 is the OS by the way and the software installed is Enternet 300 Last edited by K A Hall; 09-22-2002 at 05:27 PM. |

Try uninstalling the Enternet software and the rest of the SBC bloat/spyware - and use RASPPPoE.

Yeah, I thougt about that, but since I do not have the settings from SBC, will I still be able to make it work? Like I said I have no experience with PPPoE. Is it just going to connect and ask for Username and PW?

Your DSL line is routed directly to a gateway on their end, that's beyond your ability to configure. So yes, RASPPPoE will just find the server when you run a poll for one, then it connects via dialup networking.
Hopefully you got an ethernet modem, I don't think RASPPPoE will work with a USB modem. |

there is something esle going on with this thing. I got RASPPOE to work, but it still will not actually load any pages or ping any IP's. I have seen this before, but I cannot remember what it is.

Whoops if I'm wrong on that, last time I used it (has been awhile) there wasn't any support for a USB modem iirc, the software assumed a NIC and gave up if it couldn't find one.
Ok, so if it connects run a traceroute out to somewhere (try west coast, google is good) and see how far you get and where it dies. SBC is infamous for having only one upstream link to anywhere west of Arkansas/Missouri, if one router dies you're screwed, basically, might not just be you. |

The NIC is not USB so that is not an issue here. I dont see how I can run a tracert if I am unable to even ping anything. This thing has had so many dial up accounts installed on it, including AOL, that something is just screwed. I am removing them all now to see what happens.

I brought this thing over to my place and placed it on the network. I am still only able to get a correct IP address from my router using DHCP, but cannot surf or get out. Anyone have any ideas before I format the thing? I really dont want to have to do that.

Just a thought; are you getting a correct IP? Did you get RASPPPoE to create a connection to your adapter or to a specific service? Try changing it around - it should work even if you created a connxn to a service.
At this stage I would verify that all other network protocols and adapters are indeed completely removed, and I have a "naked" network - without any additional services like QoS or firewall running and try to get it going. |

yeah, it was getting a correct IP on my lan here, which is on cable. RASPPPoE was set up like a dial up, and using DSL over at the neighbors. It would connect just fine, but getting out on the net was a no go. I am formatting it as I type this. Screw it.

Well it may be too late but my only other suggestions are...
1) Something else that's screwing with the default network interface (AOL software, remnants of Enternet, etc.) 2) Screwup on telco's end, they don't have the user account set up properly. 3) Telco network problem (SBC has rather notorious DNS issues). Basically if the NIC works, and the software connects, and the modem syncs, it should work. I dunno :\ |

Note for the future - AOL installs a ton of adapters - and 98 has a finite limit to how many devices can bind to TCP/IP, I think it's 5.

Yeah, I know about the AOL adapters. I just could not get this one straightened out. Even after uninstalling all of them it was screwed. Thanks.
