Firewall software and winsocks.
I am doing a little research at work about firewall software.
1. Looking for causes for when a computer can connect, pull a good IP address but not surf. time outs are instant when a person hits enter or go. 2. Does Aol 7.0 + have a built in firewall program? If so can it effect IE? Can it be disabled? How? 3. alot of time customers get told they have a winsock issue that we are not allow to help with. Can anyone describe a true winsock issue, how to test for it and how to repair.

#1, when the DNS server isn't allowed through the firewall, usually on a LAN.
#2, who cares? ![]() #3, Winsock32.dll is the culprit, usually messed by an aborted installation of AOL, or other proprietary dialler. It can also get screwed by mixed installs of various versions. eg, IE6 with the winsock dll from IE5, a failure to update winsock during the install. SFC in Win98 will fix it (usually), although a "fix" of IE through it's wizard also works. |
