Not very clear with IP address and such...
Hello,
I have bought a router about a month ago and already have 3 of 4 ports running. The way i get my IP adress is very weird, I was just reading the manual when it says "Open your web browser and type http://xxx.xxx.x.x into the adress box or return key."...This was in step 4 to "Using The Setup Wizard",for a Linkys DI-604. I was very frustrated at the time so i tried putting in the x's as my lan adress and it worked...2 of the three computers are using the same adress. Is this how you get a IP adress? Are the x's I'm puting in the adress for the router? |

Your router is given an IP address...your router then distributes data from the internet to each computer connected by assigning it a local IP (usually 192.168.*.*)...
your router must direct that series of x's to it's own setup. |

You don't manually assign LAN addresses to your computers - you set the TCP/IP to assign automatically and the router handles it.

In the properties of the TCP/IP that's bound to your network adapter.

TCP/IP is found in Network Neighborhood properties.
Let's put it this way Start with one PC Connect the router to the cablemodem/dsl (if there is a reset button on the cable modem or dsl I suggest to press it. Reason is my cable modem remembers the MAC addresses) Next when those 2 are connected connect a PC to the LinkSys Router When that is done bring up the Command Prompt Window and type ipconfig /release_all Press Enter Then type ipconfig /renew_all Then see if you can access the internet. If that works just connect another PC and then follow the steps from the Command Prompt window on |
