Those sneaky b@stards...
When an add pops up, I right click on it, click properties, copy the domain, and paste in in my hosts file, thus never having to see the add again.
However, I recently encountered an add that was a flash add, and when I right clicked on it there was a different menue with no "properties". How can I add it to my hosts file if I can't find the address? AHHHHHH!!! |

I could be wrong, but I would suspect that the ad was actually running on the same domain (server?) that the web page was on.
If, and that is a big if, I am right, then I guess we couldn't block it in any case without killing the whole website? |

i think the only way to get rid of ads is to get rid of your computer, tv, and mail service. living in a shack might help, but i'm sure they'd find some way to get through your door and cram useless ads down your throat.

Not sure how your could add that site into the hosts file. I gave up that fight a while ago. As much as I hate pop ups and unders, they are an annoyance in life that I figure I can put up with. I have used NoAds for a while and it works well for me. The thing I like most is that it will allow wildcards in the window titles it looks to close. Just putting Orbitz as a wildcard cut out a huge number of ad windows from the very beginning

I had an ad hit me today with both audio and visual elements that floated across the screen. The ad maker (a television show) thought it was cute, but I found it damn annoying. The last of the little clouds to show up had a close button. Before I could close the damn thing I had to look at all of it. If I had been on dialup I would still be downloading. I dare they take over my computer.
Think I will ever watch that television show--wrong. CH |

Sorry guys, but I didn't mean to start a moral discussion on ads. I was simply wondering if anyone's found any clever tricks to stop this particular type.

I use pop-up stopper. It works on just about everything except ads that move. It can also be set to generate a sound every time it kills an ad so I get the satisfaction of knowing that another damn ad has been zapped.
Moving ads can sometimes be eliminated by hitting the refresh button. Not sure why. I hate those things, especially when you can't scroll away from them. Does anyone know the best way to close one of those. The "close" button offered on the ad seems kind of sinister to me. HT |

You didn't start a moral discussion about pop-up ads. I would just like to know how to stop the moving kind. I don't have any problem with the pop-under ads, or ads that are on top, bottom or down the side of the page. Web hosts have to make a living and advertizing seems the best way. The popover ads, on the other hand, get in the way of the efficient use of the net. The problem with most of the ad stopper software is that it often limits inoffensive ads.

There is something you can do that will not require the use of PopupStopper or AdSubtract, or similar. It might affect some web pages though.
Go to IE and click, Tools>Internet Options>Security. Click the 'Custom Level' button, scroll down to where it has the 'Active Scripting' option. Click the 'disable' option. This will prevent almost all popups/unders. (even the moving kind). To stop the flash ones, you could always temporarily disable the Flahs Plugin for your IE, but that could also affect some web pages. I still think AdSubtractPro is the best of all web page filterers. It can stop cookies, ads, popups, Java applets, java script, animations, sounds, images. Almost everything, and it's totally configurable for per website rules (if you want it to). Keeps logs of all the ads and popups stopped and what site they came from. Its the best. PopupKiller was the best popup stopper on the internet, but they stopped supporting the product and released the source (haven't seen anymore of it since, but if anyone has a link to the last version I would be very grateful). So I looked for something else and AdSubtract Pro was it. Its worth the few bucks for the Pro version, trust me.

The browser you use has an impact as well. With Mozilla you can pretty much take care of pop-up ads without any external software, as well as blocking ads from ad servers fairly easily. Ever since I switched to Mozilla several months ago, I have not had to deal with a single pop-up or pop-under ad. I have pretty much forgotten they even exist!
