A little help with an IP
Hello, I've been trying to change my IP address over the last couple of days.
I tried powering down, unplugging the cable modem from all sources, and unplugging it from the outlet for a few minutes, but it did not work. I've been told I have a static IP, which makes sense to you all but none to me. So help me out if you have the time...I don't know a lot about computers, so please use gentle and calm language. |

Hi twiztidmark:
A static IP infers that, your internet account has been assigned a specific IP address by your ISP, and that will be constant. The other type of IP address is a "dynamic IP" which means that at certain intervals, as determined by the ISP, your internet account (or cable modem) is asked to check back with their servers and get a new IP - which will be valid for some time after which the process is repeated. That is of course the norm for most of us, and I know a lot of people here would say that you're lucky to have a static IP Incidentally, why are you keen on changing your IP? The reason I ask is because, if you are getting hacked or are experiencing some trouble by people who have your IP address, then you could explain the matter to your ISP, and am sure they would assign you a new IP immediately. |

Your ISP may be able to change it, but most require you to change NIC's to get a different IP.

try to release and renew ip.for win9x,me,go to start->run->winipcfg.select right nic card and click release all and click renew al.for win2k and xp,go to start->run->cmd.type ipconfig /release_all then type ipconfig /renew_all.
Pulling the power on your cablemodem for five minutes will generally give you a new IP (if the modem reboots properly, and if your ISP didn't track any illegal modem crashings without shutting them down first. Also they just might not give you an IP again. I mean, if you pull the plug it's like telling them to sod off. Instead of an IP, you might just get an evil lawyer at your front door. Or they could remote-detonate the modem and blow your four walls away. Or they might even pour napalm fluid down the cable and decimate the whole neighborhood.... So beware!!!) |
