Question Instant Messengers

Just curious about using a Instant Messenger. If I use AIM, do I get all the AOL stuff with it?

You will get some stuff like stock tickers etc.. But the options are there to turn them all off.

You don't get the AOL software, just a bunch of "Try AOL Now!" links and icons on your desktop which I always delete.

AIM is actually a quite lean client, uses a lot less resources than ICQ, and most of the shovelware can be removed and turned off easily. I think it's a lot less obnoxious than ICQ, Yahoo, or MSN.

Doobie,
All the stuff that can be turned off and deleted is what I'm talking about.

Guess I'll take a look and give it a try. Gonna need some of your user names out there.

I hear a lot of good things about Trillian, but I've never tried it because I guess I'm set in my ways, I like my IRC client and I'm used to ICQ and AIM clients.

Is there any way to get rid of the ad screen that pops up when you first sign on other then clicking the "X"?

Press F3 (while in AIM), go to Sign On/Off, and uncheck the "Show AIM today window at sign on" option.

Trillian, then you can use any of the current messaging networks all in one client.
Personally, I think IM programs are just another way for anyone to interrupt my time, as if phones weren't bad enough.

Another vote for Trillian.

Glc got me started with these IMs by recommending AIM to me. I really like AIM, but so many people here uses MSM (dunno why though, M$ must have tainted the waters down here), so I was forced to use it. But it refused to work, some of you sure remember my thread about it, coz I deactivated it because of its intrussions and later I was unable to activate it again.

So I d/l'ed Trillian and I'm very happy with it. I can chat with all my contacts regardless of the IM they are using. Plus I have only one service running and not lots of them.

Try trillion, its free and it works with every other instant messenger. If you have friends with AOL, Yahoo, MSN, IRQ, etc... It is either picking which one to go with or with Trillion, you can cover all your bases with one easy download. Hope this helps.
