Same with me --I've tried the others and had nothing but problems with virii and port attacks.

Even though people here dont seem to like it. KazaaLite. It was re-written by a third party without the spyware. Even Lavasoft knows it's safe so it's components arent removed by ad-aware.

Direct Connect is the best of the file sharing apps. It's a shame it was never advanced by its author after the original release.
1) User controlled hubs 2) Hub-controlled minimum bandwidth and minimum share limits 3) Multi-Hub search capability 4) With user controlled hubs comes the ability to kick/ban users who don't share, cancel the uploads of others, etc. The one thing it doesn't have is the distributed download ability that exists in the Kazaa clones. This is offset usually by having primarily only broadband users available to download from, though. DC++ was also abandoned by its author and has many bugs in it, and is often seen as exploitive by hub owners since you can multi-connect to lots of different hubs, so I wouldn't recommend it for DC, just use the standard client. No, there is no spyware in the DC client (it asks for permission to install a web caching app when you install it, just say no and it'll leave you alone ).In short, DC is a file sharing app with an IRC'ish set of rules and user heirarchies. I don't have the patience to sift through Kazaa for a file that 40 people have but only one person is allowing uploads of. It's called file SHARING for a reason, people should share or be kicked, IMHO, DC allows you to do just that .To get in the more populated public hubs out there, you'll need ADSL/Cable minimum as your connection, and a total share of about 5 to 15 gigs, depending on the hub. |

There's about a 10% chance of a US ISP having the binary tree on their news server Statica
.

I dont ever use a P2P or use web searches to get mp3's. I only rely on the newsgroups, its a habit (read: addiction) that I cant get rid of. The trick is of course is to never make a post Anyhoo, if you can get it, try it sometime.

Yeah, when I first got DSL I was lucky, telco had pretty much all of them and kept about a 10 day retention on each group, but they dropped the binaries about six months ago :\.

I have KazaaLite on 4 systems and have not experienced the problems that are reported here. Also, drop a line to Lavasoft and they will confirm KazaaLite is spyware free.

You want to find a good hub, if not, you'll get Kazaa leftover crapola. I do use Kazaa and WinMX occasionally, for those VERY hard to find 80's one hit wonder songs. (I'm an 80's freak)

Lavasoft vowed not to remove spyware from programs that you agree to use and that have in the agreement that there is spyware in it. People have removed spyware from Kaazalite with Ad-Aware before becasue the Kaaza people never stated that they were using spyware. I think that changed rather recently, and either Ad-Aware doesnt' delete it anymore, or Kaaza got rid of the spyware, not sure which. But I would assume it still has some. That program is only one network. I actually prefer WinMX, but I use Shareaza and Gnucleus for the Gnutella Network. Those have ZERO spyware and use very little resources (especially Shareaza, which is probably the best and prettiest out of the two). Stay away from Kaaza I always say. Yuo will be glad you did. Use WinMX, Shareaza, or Gnucleus. Period. Just don't come cryin when Kaaza screws something up or you find spyware from it. A final note.... USE A FIREWALL |

It's not much more than downloading something through IRC really, except with a nice graphical interface and the ability to network hubs together.
Like I said tho, if you don't wanna share other stuff, don't bother. Average public hub has about a 5 to 10 gig minimum share to get access. Some also have minimum upload speed requirements. If you got 10+ gigs of stuff and at least Cable/ADSL, it's the best way to go. |
