Which High Speed To Choose?
Att Broadband and Stratuswave Communications both came out with high speed internet access in my area. Att is cable and Stratuswave is wireless, both are the same price (Att is $5 more). Att offers more perks such as multiple free web pages, but I want to know which is faster, more reliable and an overall better deal. Neither web site goes into much detail on performace issues. Oh, I currently only use a desktop computer, with no plans to use mobile internet.
Thanks Guys |

"Att is cable and Stratuswave is wireless.." If by wireless you mean sattelite, go with the ATT Cable for sure. Sattelite is the choice only in areas where you can't get cable or dsl.

That is exactly what I mean by wireless. The dish for Stratuswave is close enough for me to spit on. Do you mean that cable is faster or is it more reliable? I know that I loose my tv cable (digital) at least a couple days a month. Storms, technical problems, equipment upgrades, etc.

Well if your TV cable is unreliable, you might have a problem then as the internet signal is carried on the same system and cable. The biggest complaint I hear about sattelite is the time lag in transmission as the signal has to travel to the satellite in space and back to earth. This is mostly a concern to those who are big into online gaming as reaction times are too slow for them. However, in your situation, the satellite connection may be more reliable.

I plan to use the internet for uploading/ downloading and for listening to broadcasts of my favorite sports events. I will not be doing any gaming. At least I dont think so. You never can tell because I get bored easily..... Are the transmission rates similar between the two?

That bird is approx. 26500 miles out, so you will have uplink and downlink delays. On big downloads once it has started you probably won't know a difference. Same is probably true for normal surfing. You will be dead in games that use first person shooter because of the delay.
Chas PS I have been very pleased with cable. But keep in mind that if they load too many people per segment you can experiecne slow downs at times if everybody is on at once or several are doing large downloads at same time. I don't know if you would have that problem with a dish.

AT&T cable is generally pretty decent now that @Home is gone and they are on their own network. They cap at 1500 down and 128 up. Most wireless (and is this *satellite* wireless or *local area* wireless?) uploads are not much faster than dialup. I haven't seen any wireless of either type that's affordable that can approach 1500 download speeds. If you have a choice, get the cable, I only recommend wireless when there's no wired (cable or DSL) alternative.
