Hi sam21,
With mIRC you can connect to IRC servers and join specific channels which are like multi-user chat rooms rather than person-to-person messages like AIM. It's not as safe as AIM because it's easier for someone to find your IP and other info about your connection on IRC. PC Mech has an IRC channel as well, but I'm not sure if it's up anymore. Hope that helps. |

Sure, you can send (DCC) a file to another user.

The *unofficial* PC-Mech channel is still up, it's #pc-mechanic on Dalnet.
IRC has been around longer than any of the IM systems, even longer than AOL chat rooms. |

Many of AOL's chatrooms, especially in the gaming sector, originated from IRC. It's the grandaddy of them all. And still a lot of fun. Just watch where you wander. It's also hacker haven.

Yea, I made the mistake of being dumb and challenging a whole room of "pirates" on mIRC to try to hack my computer. Geez, I'll never do that again.

Yup, they eventually got Netbus in. I d/led a file that looked right but it wasn't. Norton AV at that time let it through and didn't even detect it after it activated. Took me about a week to get wise and I ended up fdisking the drive to get rid of all the s**t they put on my computer. It was hell. Beware of hackers plenty on mIRC.
