I have tried several, and mostly end up connecting slower. The only thing that works some in speeding up the connection is MTU. Is there really such a thing as a modem string that will connect at a higher speed?

It all depends on the particular modem, your particular phone line, and your particular ISP. You can't generalize. *Ideally* with a good modem, clean line, and decent ISP, no string modifier is needed.

Yeah,
but "high connection" speed may endup in more errors, what's actually is slowdown. Is troughput speed more important that connection speed? I've connected @ "slower speeds" and pages loaded faster, downloads wre faster. I've connected @ "higher speeds", pages were loading forever, downloads @ 2-3kbps. I think, most important- good throuput speed, even if you have to limit your connection speed. |

I was connecting 49-50 with USR but alot of errors and slowdown. I lowered max speed to 42 and fixed the errors. I then cancelled the string, dialed the other # at ISP and got high connects with very few errors. I also noted it was a 3Com rack and other # wasn't. Of course, my Express can dial either one and simply flies.

Here's a site http://www.modemhelp.org/inits/#m if you want to input some strings.

Sarge - go figure - my Sportster works very well *except* on 3Com racks. 3Com racks connect at 28.8 every time - no V.90 - it "bongs" then retrains down to V.34. On other racks (flex capable V.90 - I assume Lucent) it connects anywhere between 29333 and 40000, and is rock stable. Looking at ATI6 after terminating shows it's retrained as high as 45333 somewhere along the line.
