Incredible slowdowns on cable of recent
I am using a D-Link 10/100 NIC in my computer that is in my signature. It is running into a Linksys BEFSR41 4-Port router and then into a Toshiba Cable Modem. I am using RoadRunner supplied by Time Warner Cable, recently bought by AOL (not THAT recent... but less than 2 years ago).
I have noticed, over the last week, an incredibly slowdown in service. Webpages open slower, downloads aren't as fast. But the worst thing is on-line games. It takes me 20-30 seconds longer to connect ANY Counter-Strike server than it ever did before. Once in there, my ping bounces all around from 30-350. It goes up when I shoot, see a lot of other players, get into fire-fights, basically whenever there is "more" on my screen. It never did this before, I don't remember changing anything. I have the most up to date NIC drivers and the most up to date router firmware. I am thinking it is because AOL is taking over, a general deterioration in service and quality. But could it be something that I could fix myself? Thanks. By the way, I have tried resetting the router and the modem, and connecting directly to the modem. None of those have worked. Thanks again

I don't think that I would blame Roadrunner just yet. I tend to think that it has more to do with XP. I have RR running through a Linksys router to two computers. Both use Linksys NICs. One computer has Windows ME and the other XP.
When downloading Media files off of Newsgroups (Multiple Sequential Files) the XP computer will slow after downloading somewhere around 30 pieces, to the point that I have to disconnect/reconnect the newsreader program. On the other hand the computer with ME on it just keeps going at the same speed. To date I have not been able to find a solution to this, but I tend to lean toward XP as the culprit. Also I have have seen where some NICs have problems with XP. |
