Finally....

Well I finally made the switch from 56k modem to cable modem. I luv..luv...luv it!
I am especially happy, that with the advice of users here like glc, lilJimmie, and a few others; (see my post in Hardware forum, "Broadband coming.....cable modem/router ?") I did not wait for the cable company to come out and install it. I went by and picked it up and did the install myself. As I am not at all confident that this small cable company has much experience and the owner/installer uses a hand written cheatsheet to "cookie cutter" install. That probably works OK and I am sure he will get more experience as time goes on, but answering my questions his answers left me with a distinct impression that he was way over his head. As I was going to be implementing a Linksys BESFR41 router at the same time I did not want to be questioned about the two PC's that will be sharing the connection, anyway.
I am really appreciative of the assistance and am up experiencing streaming media and a host of things that a 56k modem just was too frustrating to attempt. I also went to grc.com to the "Shields Up" site and tested shields and probed ports. All "Stealth" now that's cool!

Broadband brings new meaning to the entire Internet experience. I now expect the performance much like the dial tone on a telephone.

Enjoy it!!!!

It's amazing how many people don't want to switch to braodband, I heard in the ares of 60 percent of adults between 18 and 35 were happy with their dial-up

Dialup and happy, used in the same sentence; should be grounds for commitment to a mental institution. LOL

Believe me, I would love to have broadband. But I live on a budget, and the extra expense of DSL or cable is hard to justify when also paying tuition, rent, car repairs, school loans, and food. If I could eat what I downloaded over DSL, believe me, I would switch in an instant.

I understand entirely, doctorgonzo. I in no way took into consideration the expense. Sorry. I was supposed to quit my nicotine habit to get the broadband, but as yet, I haven't kept my part of the bargain.
