host my own domains?
Currently.. Am paying hosting for 3 domains with very slow traffic.. So I think I have the ability to host my own sites with my DSL.. My ISP allows me to host my own website..
Here is what I have: 1.6 Mbps DSL With 5 Gb bandwidth 150 Mhz PI computer 48MB Ram 2.1 GB HardDrive Or 600 Mhz 512 MB Ram 70 GB HardDrive I was wondering.. Which computer would be better for a web hosting server. What what Operation System should I use?? Could somebody help me setting this server up?? If you want, I can host one of your domain too once I get this up. Last edited by Hau; 11-14-2002 at 09:46 PM. |

Before you strart thinking about hosting a domain using your DSL line, check with your ISP to make sure that you can do that. Most residential DSL contracts specifically forbid hosting a domain.

48megs of RAM wont be enough to support a good fast server for one.
and always remember Faster is better...

Get RedHat 7.3 or 8.0 installed on the faster server. Install Webmin for additional administration.
You'll find lots of tutorials at http://www.e-gineer.com - it explains how to install Apache, MySQL and PHP - that's almost everything you need. You also have to make up your mind about DNS and email. If you get the DNS going you might be able to use Exim as the mail server. Good Luck! Christoph PS: How much do you pay for hosting anyway?

60 GB a month is totally out of this world. If a web site would use that much bandwidth it should be hosted on its own server. Most web hosts are overselling - that means they know that the customer will never use all the available resources. That way they can offer these low price packages with tons of features, tons disk space and tons of bandwidth. If you would actually use all the available bandwidth you can be sure that your host would try to get rid of you ASAP.
Quality web hosting service has a price and it depends what kind of site you are hosting. A personal home page does not need 99.9% uptime and a fast server - a small business site should be available all the time and should be driven by a fast server. Have a great day! Christoph |

Yes, Windows 2000 server will work. Do you have static IP's from your ISP or do you have a dynamic IP?.
