Cable modem questions

I recently got a cable modem. I also installed it myself at the same time I connected a Linksys BEFSR41 router. My brother-in-law got me to upgrade to MSN Messenger 5.0 and I am unsure if this is causing problems. I get a message when MSN Messenger is signing me in that says:

We could not sign you in to MSN Messenger. It appears you are behind a firewall that does not allow direct connection to the Internet. We tried to sign you in through an HTTP proxy, but your IE proxy settings are either missing or incorrect. To adjust your IE proxy settings, click IE Tools menue, click Internet Options, click connections tab and then Lan Settings.

I did so and the only thing I have been playing with is to check Automatically Detect settings. It works sometimes and sometimes not. What gives?

MSN Messanger (like other similar programs -- ie....AOL IM, Yahoo IM) has difficulties with a router/firewall like the Linksys.

Basically you've got to setup the router to allow MSN MEssanger to access the internet. Do a search on PC Mech for issues like this -- since I don't use MSN Messanger, I don't know what ports to allow and what ports not to allow.

Cool

Do a search on mesenger on these forums. If memory serves me correctly it has to do with ports.

Well, my wife and I have been surfing and me playing online game for hours now. Everyu since this afternoon, after having waited for half hour on hold; I got a cablerocket (my isp) guy on the phone. Seems he knew why I could not raise my local cable company. The area they serve (me) had some problems. Anyway everything cleared up around noon today and everything has been rock solid. I even got MSN Messenger to work! Til next time..... Thanks all and especially that link, glc!
