xupiter......

ok, i turned my computer on in the morning like i always do and first thing i do is turn on internet explorer to check my mail. i notice a funny toolbar at the top of the window, its the xupiter toolbar... i think to myself, wow thats funny, i didnt put anything like that on there and i didnt accept anything.... so i close the toolbar and it stays closed for a while.. about an hour later it comes back for no reason, so i close it again and go on with my business. couple hours later it comes on again.... so i right click and close it again... so im browsing and browsing and i type a page wrong, it comes up to xupiter.com instead of the microsoft page not found...... so i click back, it wont let me, it goes to xupiter again..... ive tried every pop up killer, and 2 versions of ad-aware, i cant get rid of this damn thing.... any ideas?

Try deleting your cookies and emptying your "temporary internet files" folder. There's also an ad folder that's somethimes created in the "C:\windows" directory (in windows 98). Empty that folder as well. Hope that helps.

[edit:] Never mind. Zaney123's link clears up that problem.

I assume you have already tried http://www.xupiter.com/uninstall/ ?

If you do the manual uninstall, make sure you get all the keys and dlls, you may have to start in safe mode to get them all.

Hon I am so sorry you found that on your computer. I have dealt with a few people who have had that and I have found nothing short of a complete wipe to get rid of it. I've never helped someone with that who had scan registry enabled so I wasn't able to try rolling them back to see if that corrected the problem. I'm sure there are registry keys you can edit to correct the problem but I'm not taking an end user into their registry over the phone and I don't have a test machine running where I'll install it and peep myself. I have never, ever written any software company a letter about their software but this time I went off. It is the most underhanded sneaky software I've ever seen then they have this smug little, "Well you agreed to it" statement on their site where it lists FAQs. It changed their home page then locked it down so it couldn't be changed again. I hit a brick wall with eveything I tried to do on this computer and finally had to suggest their recovery CD. They have a slew of different little annoying programs, "utilities," that are like venus flytraps... they draw people in then suck the life out of their connectivity.

If you have scanreg enabled, try rolling back. If that doesn't do it, I'd format hon. I'm sorry.
