Background Humming Noise On Dialup

I am in the processing of moving my cards to another computer.
In the process of dialing up with this computer but same modem, I notice a strong background humming sound which I am sure I did not have on the other computer. I am connecting at about 45K or so but I am wondering if that noise might be slowing me down because a lot of times I am hanging and moving very slowly. Does anyone have an idea what could be causing this problem?

Could be any number of reasons. The power supply on this machine, the expansion port, another device within the computer or something around the computer causing interference, the phone line itself or noise on your phone line. I would start with having the phone company check your line for noise. Especially since it is free.

Do you have noise on voice calls, how about just when you pick up a phone, hit one digit to break dial tone and listen. Is it clear and quiet, or do you hear the humming?? If clear then probably something in your PC is producing the humming, like modem or PS.

If the noise was telco induced, ain't no way you'd be getting a 45k connect. The slowdowns, etc., are from all the other variables.

Cool

Open up and check the jack for a pinched wire. I had a call couple of weeks ago from customer with new phone connection that had a hum with voice calls. After trying different phones, cross connecting to new switch pad, using different riser pair to no avail, I opened up jack. Green wire was pinched. after that it was fine.

I agree totally that you would very likely be lucky to get 28.8 if the noise were in the line itself.
