That would be asking a lot .. you can either:
1) get yourself a DSL connection, so you can sure use the fone and the net at the same time 2) get yourself a second fone line 3) get yourself callwaiting and a program for notification while online (check with your local Telco, they will be able to help you best) - this notification will allow you to know when you are getting a call - not speak to them .. but just know when to hang up if you choose to hang up the net 4) get yourself an account for a PC-to-fone service and call people using that (then you can use your computer to speak to people) - and encourage ppl to use netmeeting to call you up ![]() .. but you cannot talk and surf at the same time with one diallup connection, one fone line and one modem.

Well, I can't really afford DSL or Cable.
I think what I'm looking for is that PC-to-Phone service you mentioned. |

Actually what I pay for DSL is the same as a second line and Internet service would cost. 39.99 month from verizon, and it is way better than a second line and unlimited dial-up access would be, and I get dial-up with it that I have used when out of town, 5mbx's, 5MB web page. Can't hardly beat it, DSL modem was free with 1yr signup and I did self-install which was free and first month was free. Check around, you may actually be able to find a deal you can afford and get high-speed access!

ktkendall .. the realities are that out here in N.America there are a ton of things that are really much cheaper than what exists outside. Heck there are a ton of differences between where you are vs Canada.

Ktkendall, I can't afford a $40 a month DSL service charge. That's why I was looking for a free service. My Dial-up cost is $10 a month, and I would like to try to keep it that inexpensive.

There is no longer anything *free* that will do anything close to what you want unless Dialpad still has a free plan. All of the Internet call waiting services that I know of have service charges.

There are devices that will allow you to get calls while you're on the net. But basically, I think you have do disconnect from the net while talking.

I think call-wave might be what you're looking for. I have been using it for almost four years and the answering machine part is free, just pay for call forwarding on busy through your phone co.
Now they have a new plan that will let you intercept calls before the message finishes playing. There is a small advertising in the banner (machine) but if you rearrange your toolbar it's not in the way at all. It also has caller ID. It's worth your checking out if you're on a budget or live in the boondocks like me, where cable and DSL are still unavailable. |

Try Emerson Switchboard. I rec'd an email offer from this: http://www.youcansave.com/switchboard.html
but it says you should have a CALL WAITING OPTIONS with your Phone Company the cost of the Unit is somewhat o.k. I havent tried it yet though. If you decide geting one, ples tell us if this ok. |
