I don't think you'll find "free" dsl. Bandwidth costs too much these days as it is -- most providers/ISPs lose money on most broadband contracts.

I'm not even sure you'll find any of those free dial-ups anymore!! It didn't pan out for them like they thought they could run like public TV off of the advertising dollars.

Netzero still offers the 10 hour a month free dialup service, I think they are the lone survivor along with their Juno affiliate.

Along with what glc said, anything over the 10 hours and you are considered a "power user".
My neighbor went over the 10 hours and Netzero restricted his access times to 1:30am to 4:30am.

Yessir Sarge!
People not familiar with the internet feel that they don't need inlimited access. They want to "just email" alittle.

That is until they see the internet.

i3OSS,

Bottom line is broadband, either dsl or cable, is gonna cost about 50 bucks a month. I'm with Adelphia cable and they supply the modem.

btw, I love your quote from Willy Wonka.

You didn't miss anything; the "free dsl" never materialized.

I was one of the (un)fortunate few that actually got it. Let me tell you, it was probably the worst product I'd ever experienced. The customer service was pretty good though. Very unreliable and to boot, had to pay $200 for a cheeseball modem. On top of it all, it was throttled at about 300kbps. The ads were quite annoying. The adbar took up about 1/8th of the screen at 800x600 (even tho I routed the service through a server so that I didn't have to view any of the ads).

In my area, there is free wireless internet but you have to buy a wireless modem and have to live near what they call a node or have a laptop and then position yourself in the area of the node.
Why this is being offered is because there are a lot of people who have strong convictions that the Internet should be free and accessible to everyone and so they have these wireless sigs which are pushing this technology more and more.

Cool

Internet is not free. If someone wasn't paying for that wireless node it wouldn't exist.

Are you sure that it's not just you? They WILL limit your logon times if you run over the 10 hours.

Burl: Check the access numbers you are trying to use - some are only for the pay service, they are limiting the free numbers.

If you want something for nothing you have to pay in one way or another.

I'm not going to cry. I survived THREE FULL YEARS on free internet. Paid not a dime. Now I'm in my second year of MSN dialup. I sold my soul last year for $200! Given that they gave me $200 up front and spent it for something I was going to buy anyway, I guess I've really only been paying for the internet for 2 months now! That would make it four years of cheapskate!

BTW, the free internet services in the heyday were definitely better than the discount services. In fact, I had better connections with the free Juno than the pay. I tried their pay for a week and dropped it!

I know, I was using winfire which was what freedsl gave me while I was waiting for my free dsl. I found that it even worked if I bypassed their software and just used it from dial-up connections, and my own choice of browsers. No add or pop-ups, then I gave it to someone else after I got verizondsl, and as far as I know they used it for quite some time! Also went to freewwweb.com for quite some time, but am quite happy with dsl for 39.99!
