Late Night Disconnects

I noticed some days when I leave my computer on overnight and the next day my aim says "Connection Lost". Even just now at 10 it went down for 10 min. It be the ISP, but could there be another reason for this?

Some (most?) ISP's have some sort of time-out after you've been on for a certain amount of time. The random disconnects could be any number of possible reasons.

Broadband (always connected) is an option.

normally an instant messager is enough to prevent a server from thinking a connection is idle.

Well for one, AIM's is notorious for disconnects. Second, you can just set it to auto-reconnect.

OK, you got DSL. I believe the ISP's change the IP address, or somesuch randomly - some do it weekly, some more frequently. When that happens, down you go. I've got some info stashed somewhere, concerning using a router although I forget the workaround. I'm close to being right though, on the ISP changing the IP address.

Are you using a router? It only happens late at night, but days are ok? When it disconnects, is the "sync" light off or on?

Here's a small sample of similar problem. BTW, dslreports.com is a great site, especially under their Tools section (tweak test and speed test) and the forums:

You have a static ip with dsl? Is it a business line? Are you sure it's static? A lot of people I talk to believe their dsl is always on... it's not... and that they have a static ip... they don't.

If it's just your AIM disconnecting... well that's SOP for AIM. If you're losing internet connectivity, could be due to maintenance. Most line/server maintenance is done overnight when there are fewer people trying to surf.

Not necessarily. Check the IP stack and see if it's set to assigned automatically or if there's an IP in there. Only other way I could think of it staying the same is if you're going through a router and it's a router assigned IP.

like my cable, I don't have a static IP address. However it has not changed in 6 months. It could change tonight, it could change tomorrow.

What modem do you have? what version of windows do you have?

I need more info to try and trouble shoot this one.

Who is your ISP? If possible, see if they will send you the 5360 Speedstream; even if they charge it's worth it. Also, you never indicated if you're sync light is still green when you disconnect.

For grins, do the Speed Test and Tweak Test here :

Who's your telco?

If it's some form of SBC, they reboot some stuff on Sunday nights around 3AM CST apparently, I always get kicked off about that time.
