Switched Modem Back To Old Computer, Now No Humming Noise and Good Speed

For days I've been trying to figure out why I'm getting a humming sound when dialing up after I put my modem in another system I'm setting up. The sound comes either in two ways, a regular lower pitched humming or a very high pitched humming. It slowed my net surfing to a snails pace and would often just stop. I tried everything I could think of but finally just gave up and took the modem out and put it back in my old system. In my old system it works perfectly. No strange sounds on dialup and no lagging slow surfing. Weird. I can't imagine what could cause those humming sounds and how one system could be so different than another to casue that. The other system has a built in network card on the board but I don't see how that would make any difference and I removed the drivers for the networking anyway. It's all really weird.

A wild stab - the hum could be (probably?) ac (electrical) induction coming through the power supply. Of course the outlet should be grounded and your cord has the 3-wire with the prong, and this lead connected to power supply. And no appliances very near that pc running. These are the easiest to verify first.

You may be right because I've tried everything else -- drivers, switching cords around, putting the computer in a different place, whatnot.

I'm not precisely sure what you mean by the rest. The power plug goes to a surge protector. The surge protector plug goes into a wall plug. The wall plug is only a 2 prong into the wall. Don't know much about the power supply connectors inside the computer though the ones that count all seem to be firmly connected to the board and the rest to the drives. Can't see anything beyond the 3 prong plug into the power supply of the computer because the powersupply box is all enclosed so I don't know what's going on inside there. Other than that, nothing seems out of the ordinary. And no appliances are running nearby though I do have a telephone fax machine next to it.

Sounds like something in your new box is giving you some real good EMI problems. I agree that it could be the power supply. It could also be the fan for either the processer or the box. Also, the shipset may not have the right firmware in it to filter out certain freqs.
