Question Can't Install Internet Explorer

everytime I try to install IE,my computer stop responding. when I check for programs running in the background there's one that says: unknow; not responding. I can't access anything on the internet, only AOL,my IPS,in that computer.I removed and reinstalled AOL adapter, removed and reinstalled AOL ,went to preferences On AOL on Font,Text and graphics and lowered amount of space disk and back to 40 with no result. contacted AOL,but no result. Everytime I try to visit a website, I only get this message: IE; can't display page, can't found server. How can I
install IE? What is that "unknow" progam running in the background that stop responding everytime I try to install IE? Any help ? Thanks.

I'm trying to install IE 5 ,using Win98 SE and AOL 8.0 but did the same with 7.0. I was told to go to Add/Remove Programs and try to remove IE,then a window will ask me to repair IE and that when I found out there's no Explorer in my computer. I scanned for virus(deep scan)but nothing was found.Thanks.

In 98, IE was part of the OS so if you never installed an update to it yet, it won't be in add/remove programs. If you're trying to install 5.0, then you must have a 4.x version of IE on your computer now and it doesn't have the repair option anyway. AOL may well be your virus. It aggressively takes over the com stack and when it's removed it closes all doors behind it. It doesn't share well and it doesn't play nicely with others.

Go to start, settings, control panel then internet options. While you're there, go ahead and delete your temporary internet files and clear the history. Then go to the connection tab. Does it show AOL as the default? And is it checked to dial only if a connection isn't already present?

Also, I'm not sure why you're installing 5.0. You can run the installation for 5.5 with service pack 2 from Microsoft's website and you can probably get to it within the AOL window at keyword... microsoft maybe? Just the microsoft, not the maybe. Or even use AOL's browser window to go to www.microsoft.com and then browse over to the downloads and get that IE 5.5 with service pack 2. I still shy away from 6 but if you're feeling froggy, go for it.

Let me know if any of that works.

1. Completely uninstall all versions of AOL.

2. Go into add/remove programs, Windows Setup tab, look in Communications and UNcheck "dialup networking" and "virtual private networking". Do not reboot just yet.

3. Go into Networks in control panel and remove ALL components. Now you can reboot.

4. Reinstall AOL. If it EVER asks you if it can be the default for ANYTHING, say NO.

NOTE that you will be asked for your Windows CD - have it ready or have the cabs on the hard drive.

I wonder why you couldn't use AOL browser to go to Microsoft Site? You could always click the "Internet or Web Icon, then type the said site. Then try donwloading the IE version you want there.
