IE Browser Problems
I am having problems with my IE browser. 2 weekends ago, I downloaded the new AOL 8.0. It ran fine for 2 days, and then, all of a sudden, I can't access any web pages. I keep getting error pages such as "The page can not be displayed" and "Action Cancelled". I can access my AOL email, but that's it. I called AOL 4 or 5 times. They had me upgrade IE, delete AOL 6.0, re-install 6.0, delete the aol adapter, clear my cache, but nothing seems to work. The last thing that they told me to do was call Microsoft and have them send me an IE extraction tool, but this will cost about $100. Does anyone have any idea of why I am having this problem, and what I can do to fix it? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Do you have any Firewall software install? Have you ever had any Firewall software installed? what is your connection, cable, dsl, dial up? If you have a firewall, don't uninstall, but lower the secruitiy settings.
What verson of windows do you have? |

I am using Windows 98 with a dial up modem, and I do have McAfee Antivirus, but I closed it and still had problems. I was told by AOL that I need to have IE reconfigured or re-setup or something. I'll try to lower my security settings tonight and see if that works. Any other ideas? I can't figure out why everything worked for 2 days when I upgraded to AOL 8.0, and then all of a sudden quit working. Thanks for your help.

How did you reformat your hard drive? I have tried alot of things and can't get this to work. I might just try to reformat if I don't figure it out in the next few days.

dpuckett,
Go into Internet Properties and make sure in CONNECTIONS it is highlighted as "Never Dial a Connection". Have you contacted AOL Tech-Support about this? I doubt they would tell you a straight out answer. Reinstall AOL and see if you are able to browse the net with IE. Also, try upgrading your IE, the upgrade may alter some settings allowing it to find a connection for it to browse websites. Steps on how to Reformat Hard Drive: 1) Create a Bootable Floopy Disk START --> Settings --> Add/Remove Programs --> Startup Disk OR Format a Floopy disk. Put into A Drive. Right click on it, and then click on "Copy System Files" . You can also do this in DOS by typing A:\s. 2) Put in the Bootable Floopy into your A Drive, and reboot the PC. 3) You should be in the MS-DOS prompt. Go ahead and type in "Format C:" or I think it would be :Format C:\" You can also boot up into DOS and use the FORMAT utility from your Windows 98 CD. Just go ahead and put in your WIN98 CD, when the menu comes up, hit With CD-ROM support, and you will enter DOS. I would repartition the Hard Drive after you Format. This will give you a clean Master Boot Record. 1) Boot up into DOS. 2) Type in FDISK 3) Click "Yes" for Hard Disk Support 4) Option 3 5) Option 1 6) Set it to 100% if you want one primary partition to equal 100% usage of your drives. If you are unexperienced with FDISK, I suggest 100% of primary partition Finish off making the partition. Reboot the PC and boot back up into DOS and format the new partition(Format C:\ or Format C: I think) You have just formatted your hard drive and repartitioned it. Nice and new. Now go ahead and load up your Operating System. 1) Put in Windows 98 CD into your CD-ROM drive 2) Option 1 when the menu comes up 3) Follow instructions when you enter Windows 98 setup I hope these instructions will help you out. Please post back if you need anymore assistance. |

Those were the instructions if you need to format and repartition your hard drive. Try the suggestions I said in my previous post for a possible solution to your problem.

Thanks alot for the information, Matt. I really appreciate it. I'm hoping that I don't have to reformat, but I'm not sure if I will have a choice. To give you a little bit of background with my current problem, I originally had AOL 6.0, and upgraded to AOL 8.0 about 2 weeks ago. I did the upgrade on Friday, and everything worked fine all weekend, and then, all of a sudden, we couldn't access any web pages on Monday. We could access AOL email, but nothing else, not even AOL help. I called AOL and they had me do the following:
Delete AOL Adapter Clear Cache Upgrade my version of IE Delete AOL 8.0 Delete AOL 6.0 Re-install AOL 6.0 Run a fix on IE (This was done through the add/remove programs) But none of this worked...I still can't access any web pages. I get the errors "The page can not be displayed" and "Action Cancelled". After a suggestion on this forum, I lowered my security settings so that McAfee doesn't filter at all, and checked "Enable" for everything in control panel/Internet options. I am using Win98 with a dial up modem. After speaking with AOL Tech support 5 different times, they finally told me to contact Microsoft and have them send me an IE extract tool via email. I checked their website, and it said that microsoft charges $99 to inquire about any kind of tech support. I am getting very frustrated with this whole thing and definitely don't want to spend $99 if I don't have to. Any other suggestions that you have would be very much appreciated. I will check the "connections" in Internet properties tonight. Thanks again for your help. Dave |

Thanks, I'm just getting frustrated with it. It is actually my girlfriends computer, and she has several final college papers that she needs to write this week, and I would like to get it fixed asap. Thanks again.

Completely uninstall all McAfee software, then do a complete virus, trojan, and spyware scan with something other than McAfee. If you have any popup or ad blocking software, uninstall that too.

I don't have anything other than McAfee. I'm not sure that this would work though, because I could access all webpages before I tried to upgrade to AOL 8.0, and I've had McAfee for about 1 1/2 years. Any idea why this might be the problem? Do you think that 8.0 messed something up within McAfee? I'll try it tonight and see if that's the problem. Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.
