It pays to look around. Gleaned this tidbit from Forum Click.

In Internet section, StuartW wrote:
Some site you access and download, may contain 'spyware', that logs every site you go to for the purpose of sending you appropriate adverts If you want to check to see if you have any spyware programmes on your computer go to http://www.lavasoft.de/free.html and download a short programme called ad-aware. This will detect intrusive spyware including the infamous Radiate/Aureate.

I've always defaulted my browser to my providers home page (GTE, now Verizon). Ad-Aware proved that GTE.net was issuing me Doubleclick cookies. Changing the default to Verizon.net stopped the Doubleclick cookie (at least this time). .D

Well, my two cents.

All ya need to stop adware and banner cookies are...

1) Simple software firewall that restricts outgoing traffic like ZoneAlarm. http://www.zonelabs.com

2) A real browser. ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape6/

Gibson was the first that talked about spyware. Check his site on http://www.grc.com.

His Optout tool does the same thing (and I'm sure it's the fastest around).

There is also no INstall for OptOut. It doesn't put anything in the reg, make any folders, nothing. Just download it and run it.

Actually, OptOut does add a reg entry.

Q - How do I remove Optout from my system?
A - Just delete the OptOut program and you're all done. The freeware release of OptOut does leave a tiny bit of debris in the system registry. So, if you want to delete that also, use the Registry Editor to delete the key named: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Gibson Research\OptOut!" This will remove every last trace of OptOut.

Ad-Aware also makes a number of enteries.

Think I'll keep and use them both.
