Windows Update

Hello everyone,

I have a question about windows update. I work for a company where we build new and used computers for people. We also format a lot of peoples computers. When we do any of these we install the OS and run windows update. Windows update generally takes a long time to do, even on a T1, and since we do this tons of times a day, everyday we are looking for an alternative. I have seen Microsoft SUS thing and it isnt exactly what we want it to do but close..
What we're looking for is to build a server that will go out to the internet and download all of the updates. Then we want the server to act as our own personal windows update machine. That way everything will be local and we can download 1000 times faster. Also since we work on many systems this would have to work with Win 95, 98, ME, XP, 2000 etc etc... If you know of something but it doesnt work with all of these, still please let me know.

Thanks for the help
Keith

Good luck with that. It seems like as soon as you do an update, there is another one hanging around. You could pick up the downloaded files from the browser cache but often times there are different versions for 9x than for the NT platform and sometimes different versions for XP. Most of the critical updates can be downloaded individually. You can also get a CD version of IE 6 SP1. I don't know if there is really a good answer other than those suggestions.

Subscribe to M$ TechNet - they issue updates monthly on CD. You can also use the corporate Windows Update site, it lets you download network installs of patches.
