Hey everyone, I was hoping I could get some suggestions for a good FTP server to use. The thing I am looking for in a good FTP server app is good compatibility with web browsers. Like if someone were to just type ftp://user:user@192.168.... in their browser. I was previously using Bulletproof FTP, but some people had a hard time connecting to it via their browser. I just wiped my HD and did a fresh install of win2k pro. There's no built-in FTP server in this OS is there? Thanks in advance.

Yes there is, if you install IIS. Control panel, add/remove programs, add/remove Windows components, Internet Information Services.
NOTE that this has security issues just like anything else from M$. |

Should I just go with a third party server app then? I am guessing the MS server would be most compatible with browsers, but if there are security issues could you suggest a good third party one? Thanks

Other than Bulletproof server, Serv-U, War, and WFTPD, I don't know of any others.

I'd stay with BP FTP server and just have users use a FTP program or a program to assist in downloads like FlashGet, Download Accelerator, GoZilla....there are plenty and none of them issues with BP FTP server.

Browsers were really not made to do FTP. Windows has a barebones command line client or you can download free FTP clents, WS-FTP LE is the old "standard" here. Of course, there's Bulletproof FTP Client which is outstanding, but it's $29.
