A new company is offering wireless connection here for $60.00 bucks a month. That includes setup, equipment, ISP, and unlimited access. Since cable and DSL are not available to me, what do you think? Got any pros or cons?
Right now I pay $20.00 for ISP and $20.00 for second phone line, so I'd have to come up with another $20.00. Carl |

Thats a great price for a wireless connection. The wireless service here on this Island is 99$ a month and its limited to 2 gigs a month
They ain't gonna rip me off.

Carl - what company is that? Do you have details - what type of antenna, what speeds, etc.?

There was a quick article in the paper about it. I'll try to dig it up and reply back. Carl |

Do they have a term commitment? Do they have a back out period. Depending upon what's happening, it may or may not be a boon. If you only doubled your speed, is it worth $20/mo more?
You're going to be trail blazing. Some will swear by it and others at it! |

RayH, I'm not signing anything until I get all the details. I'm waiting for a friend to email me about it. He signed up for it.
In about 6 months, ATT Broadband is suppose to take over Cableone here and will bring in cable pc. I can wait. DSL will be available in 2 years and should be 50.00 a month or so. Carl |

The standard in the Bay Area for cable and DSL is $39.95 w/no equipment and no setup fees. The situation is getting to the point that you do your own installation! How far do you live from the telephone company? Are you within 3 miles?
Try Telocity. DSL. Self installation, no equip charge ($25 s/h), NO TERM commitment. Ray |

Ray,
I'm 27000 ft from the CO. Had a telco out to check things and he was telling me that PacBell is getting DSL to all the business districts first. It will be about 2 years before homeowners here get it. Carl |

At 27000 feet you are gonna be restricted to IDSL which ain't worth the bux for a 144K connection. Your answer is cable or wireless. I'm waiting for Sprint Broadband Wireless to get here.

Some info about wireless connection company,
Name: Fire to Wire Speeds claimed: As fast as DSL with capacity of T-1 depending on net traffic. Antenna: Actually a 18" dish. Cost: $60.00 month, unlimited access, free setup and equipment, and month to month. No time commitment. Also, you can have more then one pc on it. You buy the network card. That was the main reason my friend jumped on it. He's running 3 pc's. The company is in Hughson, Ca (central Cal) and has a signal radius of 25 miles. Carl |

Only thing is no gaming Carl. Satellite works from what folks have told me, but not with a traditionally "fast" connection. Bigger packets average things out, but ping times to servers in the same country are gonna be 400+.

We run most of our WAN on wireles, speeds are excellent. Download speeds in excess of 140K/s. If you do a lot of downloading etc. then the price is definately worth it.

Carlgif It sounds like not a bad deal. Sprintbroadband is starting to offer fixed wireless in the Bay Area for $49/mo, with a sliding fee for equipment depending upon commitment term. $99-$299 (3 years - 0 years). So at $60 w/no commitment, sounds good!
Who knows, this thing may be slow in a couple of years. Remember paying $100+ for a 56K modem? I remember borrowing a 1200 baud modem because they were too expensive! |

I'll take a look at the wireless and see if its in the cards for me. Carl |

I paid $243 5 years ago for a Practical Peripherals 28.8 PCMCIA modem.........now you can get a 56k for well under $100. Good thing it's a reliable modem - I still have it in my laptop - and still connecting at 26.4.
