Can't hit Internet

HI,

I'm having a problem hitting the internet on a friends computer. It's a gateway E-1600 with an Intregrated NIC running Win 2000 pro. When I try to bring up any page it says this page can't be displayed. I immediately checked my ip address, DNS, and related settings, all checked out perfectly. So the next thing I thought was faulty NIC, so I did a self ping, checked out fine, I also pinged my ISP, no problem, even did a tracert to my ISP also no problem. So I just figured it must be IE 6, so I had Netscape 6 on a cd so I tried it, also nothing. Same message "Page Can't be Displayed. So I figured it must be a windows issue so I reloaded Win 2000, same results nothing. Could the network still be at fault even though it seems to work so well. Any and all help will be apprecited.

Thanks,
jw

Hi JW;
Did you check internet options>connections tab> LAN settings, although I know you said Netscape didn't work either, SO, How is that PC connected to the internet?? And did it ever work?? Sounds like a DNS problem, but without a little more info about the actual way this LAN connection is supposed to get to the internet, I can not tell you much more!

Sorry about that. The computers are part of a ethernet Lan, using Cat 5 cable, going out on a T3 connection. Yes it did work fine up until bout a week ago then suddenly stopped. Doesn't seem to be any strange software programs loaded on it. I've tried a laptop using that same internet drop using the exact same settings and worked fine.

Thanks for the help!

T3 you say, well I take it this isn't a home system. Well someone or some place that can afford a T3 connection might be using a proxy server. Check to see if the Proxy connections are correct.

Especially since you can ping successfully to the ISP, I would think that narrows it down to either DNS settings or Proxy settings are incorrect or not functioning properly.

I was thinking about that thing where you clear the ARP cache, forget how to do it but it is a possibility.

Just had an idea you can try. You said you can ping sites but can't get to them. Try this; ping a site, then enter that IP in the address bar and see if you can get to a site that way. If you can then there is not doubt it's the DNS.

thanks for all the responses. I got it fixed by just reloading (Clean Install) of Win 2000. I'll have to reload my programs but at least that part is fixed and learned alot by the experience, so it's not all bad. Thanks everybody.

Seems like you should not have gone to such extreme measure, but glad you got it working.
