Thumbs down Why does Netscape become impotent??

Why is it that netscape always stops working after you go to so many websites........ie. goes to the link, loads 1% and then stalls indefinitely. You can't even just close the browser and reopen it either, you have to restart the computer.
Am I missing something, or are the creators of Navigator missing something.....???
This is not just on my computer either, its on everyone I've ever been on.

I'm using 4.7, but I usually just use explorer to avoid it altogether.
This has got to be a very common problem, my parents, friend's and others do this also.

I quit using Netscape 4.7 for the same reasons. Tried 6.0 and 6.2 but they didn't seem to be any better.

Yeah and it's not like it only does it sometimes. If you stay on it for a while and actually surf different web pages it'll happen every single time.

Does the amount of time change when you increase or decrease your disk cache size?

Your right , I have found manually clearing that cache periodically keeps Netscape stable. I do still keep 4.79 on my machine when IE has probs on a particular site I find usually Netscape can handle it.

From what I've seen, it's pretty much at random. It can happen after 2 minutes, or an hour, but you'd never get through 3 or 4 hours of surfing without it going kaput.

I never have increased or decreased my disk cache size. I've emptied it, once in a while. I wasn't aware of this.

It's a bug with 4.x versions of Netscape that was never fixed. I've heard it was the cache, and that it was the javascript parser, don't know if either are true but you can rest assured that it will probably never be fixed .

I suggest moving up to Mozilla, Netscape 4.x is a dead browser and will become less and less compatible with newer web development tricks as time goes by.

Yes Mozilla is good, and sure is nice to automatically be able to stop pop-ups without 3rd party program, but I am finding times that mozilla seems to struggle a bit with certain sites and I go to IE and works fine.

Its also because Netscape is rather stringent with usage of disk cache (read: decent), and tries to clear off the cache when it maxes out. IE does not clear out the cache this rigorously, result is a rather crappily fragmented HD.

I had this problem with the 4.7 series of Netscape also. My family likes the feature of separate browsers using profile manager so IE wasn't an answer for us.
Try Netscape 7, I have used it for several months without any problems.
