OK guys, heres a good one, try to follow me, a buddy needs help!
He has a compaq pressario, has aol 3.0 installed, it connects fine. he also installed the newest version of aol, 5.0 or whatever it is? but it will not connect. over the phone I walked him through the setup for expert install of the modem and the access numbers. then when he goes to dial in it says his com port is invalid or busy. through a bunch of checking things out, we found the following program listed in "Program Manager" it is called: "operator" I had him click on that and end task....then had him try to dial in to the new version of AOL, and it connected. now my question is, "What is the "operator" program listed under "Program Manager?" not sure if this will help but evidently when he first installed the newer version of aol some how he told the set up that he was connecting via LAN, which he is not, as he is connecting via "phone/modem".......could "operator" be a program that some how installed by him telling the aol set up that he was hooking up via LAN? I think it is because aol 3.0 works great without ending that "operator" program, but the new 5.0 version does not work unles you end that task. for now I told him to leave the "operator" program on his 'puter and to just "End Task" to sign on to aol with the newer version until we find out what that program is. |

found solution/problem to my previous post
sorry guys,
I was unable to go to the web earlier, but just finished searching for this problem and found the answer. it is a program that is on the compaq prossarios and you can either do as we did, "con+alt+del" or you can permanently remove that application so this error does not happen. thanks one and all, sorry about that |

You can and should uninstall it or remove it from the startup group if you don't use the modem for auto answering the phone and receiving faxes. Compaq Operator does not play nice with TAPI.
