I'm think about getting ADSL but there is no way in hell that I will ever go without having a backup ISP. So can you still use your 56K modem when your ADSL connection ISP goes down.

most aDSL lines are static, meaning when the modem and the computer are on, that computer is on the internet. If that goes down, all you have to do is open up the Dial-Up-Connection (via Dial UP networking) and dial in. If you connect to both the Dial-In and aDSL at the same time, dial-in will take priority.
